“Thank you, beautiful girl.” Evan falls to his knees in front of me, falls into a sort of cross-legged position and pulls me into the space, so my back is to his front. He slants his lips against mine and kisses me so tenderly, it almost makes me cry.

My belly rumbles with hunger.

Evan caresses my face. “Let’s get lunch.”

“That was the plan. I hope my investor isn’t going to fire me.”

“I think he can be persuaded to overlook one long lunch.”

I love how dark his brown eyes are, how serious they are, how they’re banked with heat, and that makes me feel wanted.

“I’m going to shower quickly,” I say.

He helps me to my feet.

“Good idea.” He nuzzles my neck.

I laugh and playfully swat him away. “Separate showers or this will turn into dinner.”

“Fine. I guess I'll have to wait until tonight.”

A shiver rolls down my back at the promise.

I brush his lips against mine. “Yes, you do.”

“Go shower princess, before I change my mind.” He slaps me gently on the behind.

I laugh, striding across the bedroom into the shower.

Even though I feel giddy and wanted and cherished, I push away the dark thought that is telling me Evan doesn’t know everything about me.

And once he does…I push the thought away. I want to believe that he’ll want me no matter what.

I furiously scrub my body, drowning out that thought, not letting myself feel remorse over the promise I gave him.

I’m not going to bolt.

And if he does, once he knows about my skeletons in the closet, well, that’s on him.

But for the first time, I don't feel like my trust has been misplaced.

I know it’s wild to think that we could have a relationship in such a short amount of time, but I can't keep pretending that what is between us doesn’t exist.

I step out of the shower, dry off and from the closet, pick out a dark green dress with daises on it that hits my knee.

It’s still cold out there, so I throw on a pair of leggings to complete my official look.

My phone rings and I reach for it. “Hi mom.”

I turn at the choked laugh behind me, see Evan disappear into the shower.

“Hi Mara! I needed to hear your voice. We've been missing each other.”

That’s kind of on purpose on my part because I'm worried about spilling the secret to her.

“Yeah. How is the cruise?”

“It’s amazing! Last night we saw this magician, and he was fabulous. How is everything there?”
