After three hours cooped up in the store, Loki couldn’t wait to go outside to relieve himself. When he was done, Jane had to wrestle the mannequin arm from his mouth and settle him into the car.

When he was strapped in, Jane turned to Clare.

“I didn’t actually expect to enjoy myself today, but you’ve turned what was a stressful chore into something fun.”

Clare smiled, flashing white teeth at her. “I’m so glad to have helped. And listen, LA can be a big and lonely place when you don’t know anyone. I know you have your buff businessman to talk to, but if you need anyone else, or just want to grab a cup of coffee, here’s my number.”

She handed Jane a business card from the store that she had scribbled her details onto.

“I really would love to see you again, not only to make sure you’re OK, but I liked your company too.”

Jane took the card, surprised by the rush of happiness Clare’s offer of friendship gave.

“Thanks.” She tucked it carefully into the new handbag slung across her shoulder.

“Call me, OK? I mean it.”

Climbing into the car, Jane wound down the window. “I will. I promise.”

“And if your businessman has any friends…” Clare wiggled her eyebrows suggestively, making Jane laugh. Giving her a bright wave, Clare disappeared into the store, leaving Jane smiling at the first friend she had made in this town. Looking across at Loki, she grinned.

“Well, that wasn’t as horrible as we thought it was going to be. Maybe, it’s going to be a good day after all?”
