I darted my gaze around the neighborhood one last time before I leaped forward and opened the door, hopping inside. I’d barely shut the door when Lincoln jammed his foot over the gas, sending us flying down the road.

I grabbed my seat belt and buckled in before turning to look over my shoulder. No one had to come out of the house, so it was likely that no one even knew the car was missing yet.

We rounded the corner, and I let out a sigh of relief. They wouldn’t be able to tell which way we’d gone either.

Lincoln nudged my arm and nodded at something sitting on the center console. My mouth popped open. It was a cell phone, and it wasn’t locked either since it was plugged into the car’s port. It had the GPS pulled up and a full battery.

I picked the phone up with trembling fingers. I almost dropped it twice before gripping it with both hands, then I punched in the numbers for my mom’s phone and held my breath.

We were going to find out if it was her who’d sent the email or not.

I put the phone on speaker and chewed on my bottom lip. It rang twice before it connected. There was a shuffling sound, and then a crackle before my mom’s voice came over the line.

“Hello?” She sounded out of breath.

I relaxed back into the seat and squeezed my eyes shut. A tear trickled down my cheek. “Mom, it’s me.”

She made a sound that sounded like a sob. I could almost imagine her putting her hand on her chest. “Oh, my love, thank goodness. I’ve been so worried about you.”

My bottom lip trembled, and I gulped. “Is Dad okay? Mark, Brandon?”

“Yes, yes, my love. They’re fine. Most everyone is fine. Where are you? I tried to respond to your email, but maybe it didn’t go through.”

“I’m sorry. We wanted to make sure it was you with everything going on.”

My mom made a hushing sound. “It’s okay. I understand, and you’re right. We must be overly cautious now. Where are you? I’ll coordinate with your father so you aren’t by yourself.”

I looked at Lincoln with wide eyes. I actually had no idea where we were.

Lincoln cleared his throat and spoke up. “We’re about eighty miles from the border. We don’t have enough gas to make it all the way back to your pack. We are on the road again in a stolen vehicle with almost half a tank. We’ll need to ditch it at some point, but we can’t be tracked this way.”

Alpha Dane and Mikey might not be able to track us, but they would know which general direction we were headed.

My mom was quiet for a moment. “How far do you think you’ll be able to make it? Sloane, I don’t suppose you have any money with you?”

I shook my head and then realized that she couldn’t see me. “No, I don’t have any money or a card.”

She huffed, making the phone crackle. “Let me speak with your father. He’s not back yet. Perhaps he’ll be able to meet you somewhere and get you back safely. Is anyone else with you besides Lincoln? Mark said that some of the other guys were with you when you left?”

I shared a look with Lincoln. I didn’t miss the hesitation in her voice when she asked about the other enforcers and women. I tucked a lock of hair behind my ear and looked down at the phone.

“We were in a car accident shortly after we got going. The car was undrivable. I was trapped in the back and couldn’t get my ankle free. Lincoln stayed to help me. By the time I was free, they were gone, and we didn’t know which way they went. The enforcers who hit us left the car in the middle of the road. It was still running, so we took it.”

A lump formed in my throat. We hadn’t had a choice but to leave, but it still made me feel guilty for leaving them behind. The women were most likely recaptured, and the men killed.

It sounded like my mom covered the phone and was whispering to someone. “I’m so sorry that happened, sweetheart. I’m glad that you are okay. We haven’t heard from the others about what may have happened to them. We haven’t heard anything from Alpha Dane about it either, so maybe they’re still on the run.”

I switched the phone to my other hand and wiped my palm on my pants. “I hope so.”

It would be absolutely devastating to have a few seconds of freedom, only to be recaptured again. Alpha Dane would make sure that any punishment he handed out to those women would be severe.

My mom was quiet for another moment before she spoke up again. “Is this a good number to reach you at?”

I looked down at the phone. It would stay unlocked as long as we had GPS turned on and plugged into the port. “Yes.”
