I followed my heart and became a certified doula. With Kyerra being pregnant, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to apply everything I learned to a real-life situation. When I asked, Kyerra readily accepted. Throughout that process, it allowed me to get to know her. I disagreed with the way she handled her pain, but I understood how love could drive you to make bad decisions.

“I appreciate it. This family can be a lot. Especially my mother-in-law,” Kyerra rolled her eyes at the mention of Sophia.

“Which is crazy. You’ve known them forever.”

“She looks at me differently now. I can’t say I blame her, but Sophia is the last person who needs to be casting judgment.”

I offered Kyerra the same support I gave Hailo. It wasn’t easy being with a Meraux, and though Kyerra had more experience than us, her circumstances were very different. Going from one Meraux to the next put her under a microscope, and I knew how that felt.

I had just as many eyes on me, wondering how the single mom managed to snag Mack. It wasn’t allowed, but somehow the rules were bent for me, and they didn’t like it- mainly the women who never had a chance with him anyway.

Unlike Hailo, it bothered me sometimes. Whenever I would bring it up, she’d remind me to fuck them people and threaten to curse out all of them.

“Fuck them. Tonight is mom’s night out, so we need to find you something sexy to wear,” I responded, taking a page out of Hailo’s book. Solana wasn’t a mother, but she was still coming out with us.

“I need it. I don’t know where these breasts came from, but they can go back,” Kyerra replied, looking down at her breast. I wasn’t gay, but they’d damn sure grown from what they used to be.

“I’m sure Tyson is enjoying them,” I smirked, and Kyerra’s expression shifted. They were still trying to find balance. I didn’t need her to tell me. I could see it all over her face.

“Sometimes.”

“Is everything okay?”

“Some days,” Kyerra shrugged, browsing through the racks of clothes.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will your marriage. Be patient.”

“Thanks, Sky.”

“You’re welcome, girl.”

Kyerra and I settled for outfits for tonight and some other things we didn’t need. I had never been good at taking care of myself but was slowly improving. Today I brought myself things I didn’t even need and had no destination to wear them.

Driving home, there wasn’t any guilt in my heart because I deserved it. I pulled the new car Mack gifted me for mother’s day into the driveway and hopped out.

“Hey, baby.”

“Wassup,” he kissed me and leaned over, observing the bags I sat next to where we stood. “What do you have here?”

“You’ll just have to see tonight,” I flirted, popping his hand that was trying to sift through my bags.

“You and Lo bought out the dam store, I see.”

“I went with Kyerra.”

“That’s dope.”

“Hmm, you remember that. Just because you like playing mediator. I don’t.” I had a headache already thinking about it. Hailo and Kyerra stayed clear of each other for the most part, but considering how close-knit this family was, that wasn’t always possible.

“If anybody can bring Kyerra and Lo together, it’s you and your magic.”

“My magic?”

“Yeah. You know, the stuff you sprinkled on me in my sleep to make me addicted to you,” he flirted, kissing my neck.

“I did no such thing.”

“Nah, you didn’t, but the magic is in you, Sky. It’s just who you are, baby.”
