“To see the irritation on your face? Maybe.”
Despite myself, I can’t help smiling a little. She could most certainly make good on her promise, but she won’t.
She huffs and leans back. “So are we going to talk about this spy of yours or what?”
I nod, all humor gone. “The double-crosser has to be somewhere in this office so I’ve come up with a list of likely suspects.”
She rolls her eyes. “I’m not a child. I don’t need you to list off names again.”
I hold up her paperwork and point to the chicken scratch. “Not according to this, you’re not.”
She frowns in irritation but nods for me to continue, so I begin ticking off names. Again.
“First, there’s Lewis who works in accounting. He was hired around the time the sabotage attempts started. And since he works in accounting, he would know what supplies we’re ordering and how to hurt us financially. Plus –”
“He is a vampire. Kind of keeps to himself.” I nod, and she hums thoughtfully. “You always have to watch out for the quiet ones. Alright, who’s next? Let me guess, Angel.”
I nod. “Everyone needs an office manager.”
Sloane growls and I raise an eyebrow. The thief shrugs. “It’s just that I’ve only been here half a day and can already confirm your office manager is a nightmare.”
My lips quirk up in a smile. “Ah, so she’s already running you hard?”
Sloane glowers. “That woman is no angel.”
“No, but she’s good at her job.”
“And yet she’s one of your suspects,” she counters.
I grimace. “True. Angel has intimate knowledge of how the office operates and everything that goes on in it. We –”
“Had an incident two weeks ago,” she interrupts, showing off. “Where all the computers were glitching, and it slowed processing to a crawl. So –”
“If anyone would know how much that would hurt us, it would be her.” I smile as her scowl deepens.
“I think you should just suspend her until we can clear her,” she says.
“No. Next is Gage, who’s head of our marketing department. We’ve had several leaks, and he gets to know about all upcoming products.”
Sloane looks thoughtful. “If it is him, you really are in massive trouble.”
“Not as much as if it’s my last suspect.”
“Who is?”
“Valentina. My VP.”
Sloane’s eyes go wide. “You don’t trust your own VP?”
I let out a long sigh. “I want to. Val and I have worked together for years, and she’s been a trusted co-worker and friend. However, she used to work for Craig years ago, and there might still be a connection there.”
The thief raises an eyebrow. “So that’s your whole list? Just those four people?”
“The four most likely suspects, but it could be anyone, really, if they’re smart enough.”
Sloane sighs. “I’ll keep a sharp eye out then. In the meantime, we need to figure out how to get to the root of the problem.”
Getting information on Craig and his operation would cut the head off the snake and stop this nonsense for good. The only question is how.
