I laughed. “Oh, I can’t believe you’re feeling sorry for yourself after hogging all the orgasms. I’m going for another one.” I put my finger back on my clit. “On second thought, maybe give it a minute. Too sensitive.” I sighed, picking up the phone and taking it off speaker phone.
“I’m having an idea,” said the prince darkly. “We can just seduce Maguire.”
“What?” I said, sitting up on the bed, clutching the phone.
“I smelled the way you reacted to him,” said the prince. “And something about his scent, I think he’d be into it.”
“You’re not serious,” I said. Because part of me wanted him to be serious.
“I’m not,” agreed the prince. “Truth is, I don’t actually want him fucking you. Or anyone fucking you.”
I smiled, liking that, feeling a warmth travel through me at the thought of it, something that seemed to rub up against the feeling about Maguire, and then I only felt confused and bad and ashamed. My smile faded.
“And that,” said Devlin, “is not fair. And it’s not even like me. I’m never this way.”
“It’s not fair?” I said, feeling a little off balance.
“No,” he said.
“But it seems to me that’s the way relationships usually work. People are faithful to each other.”
“Oh, come on, be honest with me omega. How many times have you really been utterly faithful? To anyone?”
“I…” I squirmed again. “I don’t really… date. Or have sex.”
“What?” He sounded concerned.
“It’s too much,” I protested. I had dated occasionally, had some random hookups, too, but they always made me feel out of control and unsatisfied. “Besides, when I do have sex, it’s like…”
He waited, but I didn’t finish. “Omega? Like what?”
“I guess it’s like it’s never enough,” I said in a defeated voice. “But I guess that’s because I’ve been waiting for an alpha.”
“Yes, you have,” he said, and I could tell he was smiling. “And I won’t stop until you have enough, sweetling.”
I let out a little sigh. I liked that. “So, that’s all I need, right? Just you? With our bond?”
He hesitated.
I pulled a blanket on the bed up over my bare skin. I wanted to be covered for this conversation for some reason. “Devlin?”
“I don’t know if I want to make promises like that,” he said carefully.
“What kind of promises?”
“Like fidelity,” he said. “With designations, it’s different.”
“But you said the bond we have is a pair bond, so all we need is each other.” Or did I need more? Did I need that bodyguard for some reason? Why was this so confusing?
“No, you don’t get it,” he said. “You don’t know what my needs are—actually, you should. You should have equal, maybe more intense needs, because you’re an omega. Are you really telling me you don’t have a boyfriend? You don’t date? Really?”
“Obviously, if I had a boyfriend, I wouldn’t have let you do anything with me.”
He laughed. “You most certainly would have.”
I didn’t say anything, because some part of me felt the truth of that statement. I pulled the blanket tighter around myself. “You have needs,” I said dully. “So, I just have to accept your dalliances on the side.”
“No!” He was forceful. “I don’t want it like that.” He sighed. “Maybe we could try it.”
