I break through the trees and come out in the clearing beside Briar Lake. There are a few tents set up near the water, and I head that way. A few lanterns flicker on and people start to come scrambling out of their tents. My eyes lock on a curvy girl with snow-white hair as she backs away from her tent.
I reach her side as a man comes hurrying out of the tent after her. Instantly, my wolf and I are on alert.
“Stay there,” I growl at the man, and he freezes.
He looks pale and scared, and I know that he was the one to hurt this girl.
“Are you…” I ask, turning to look at the woman.
My wolf and I smell it at the same time.
Holy shit, I gasp.
Our mate! My wolf says at the same time.
I can’t believe that we finally found her.
Now claim her, my wolf orders.
“I’m okay,” she stammers, answering my half-asked question.
“Did he…”
“No,” she says.
Bite her! My wolf snaps.
Not here.
Then at least get a whole sentence out.
“What happened?” I ask my mate.
“He-he came in my tent! He was touching me, my shoulder,” she adds when I start to growl.
“Do you know him?”
“He’s my stepdad.”
So he definitely shouldn’t be sneaking into her tent…
“Oh my gosh, Sophie! You’re so dramatic! It was probably a mistake. He just got the tents mixed up,” an older woman scolds my mate as she stomps over.
“Mom, look at the tents. Mine is half the size of yours and a different color!” Sophie argues, and I nod.
It would be impossible to mix the two tents up. Even in the dark, it’s obvious that they look nothing alike.
“That’s exactly what happened!” The man says, latching onto the excuse. “I just got confused. I didn’t mean to scare you, Sophie.”
I look at my mate and can see that she’s not buying it either.
“Okay, everyone back to bed! We have a big day tomorrow,” a man says, and I’m guessing he’s the tour guide for this little group.
“Come on,” Sophie’s mom says, grabbing her husband’s hand and pulling him towards their tent.
My mate is shivering, and I hurry to pull off my jacket and wrap it around her shoulders.
“Here, you must be freezing.”
