“What were you doing out here at night?”

“I was on patrol. I work for the Mountain Rescue team and was checking the trails when I heard you scream.”

“I’m glad you were,” I admit, and he smiles softly.

“Me too.”

“Have you lived here long?”

“A little over a year. I moved here after I got out of the Air Force.”

“You were in the military?”

“Yeah. I did eight years. What about you?”

“We’re here for vacation. It was Roger’s idea,” I tell him.

“Where are you from?”

“Utah. I went to college in California and just moved back home after I graduated.”

“Do you like it there?”

“It’s fine.”

“I never pictured myself living in the desert,” he murmurs, and I frown.

“Are you planning on moving?” I ask him.

“Maybe.”

I smother a yawn, and he smiles, his eyes flashing at me in the dark.

“You must be exhausted. Go to sleep, little one. We’ll talk more in the morning.”

I nod, my eyes already falling closed as Flint rolls on his side to face me. I want to keep talking to him, but before I can think of a question, sleep takes me.

FOUR

Flint

I’m exhausted, but I promised my mate that I would protect her, and that’s what I’m going to do. The sun is just starting to rise, and I rub my tired eyes, trying to wake up a bit. I hear a tent unzip nearby, and my wolf and I perk up, listening for any other sounds. I can hear someone moving around outside, but they’re further away so I know it’s not her stepdad.

Probably the tour guide, I tell my wolf, and he nods.

He remains alert, though, and so do I.

Our mate is still sound asleep and I reach over and brush a few strands of hair away from her face. She looks so pale and I wonder if that’s her normal shade or if maybe she’s cold. I reach out, brushing my fingers along her soft skin. She feels warm enough.

Bite her, my wolf says, and I shake my head.

We need to tell her about us and fated mates still. We can’t freak her out and scare her off.

He snorts, and I roll my eyes at him.

More people start to stir in the other tents and I listen for any sounds headed towards our tent.

“Should we wake up Sophie?” I hear her stepdad ask, and her mom snorts.
