He doesn’t sound like his usual harmless self right now. There’s a bite to his words and I back away from him.

“Just going for a little walk,” I lie, and he frowns at me.

“You’re going to see that man from last night, aren’t you?”

“Yes,” I admit, and he snarls at me.

“You little slut. You’ll just give it up to anyone, huh?”

“No!” I shout. “No, I’m a?—”

I cut myself off and back up a few more steps. I wonder if Flint can hear me. Am I being loud enough?

“Now that you’re back home, you’re going to have to start earning your keep. I’ve got a few things that you can do if you want to stay in my house.”

He starts to reach for his belt, and I panic. Part of me is almost relieved that I’m not going crazy. Roger really was flirting with me. He really was trying to get with me.

Ew, though.

“I don’t want that. I’ll move out,” I tell him.

“That will take time. Come on now, Sophie. You’ll give it up to strangers. Why not dear old dad.”

I want to vomit. This can’t be happening.

“No.”

It’s all I can get out.

He’s not going to stop though, I can see that, so I do the only thing that I can, and I turn and run.

“Flint!” I scream as I crash through the woods.

I can hear Roger running after me, and I push myself to go faster.

“Flint!” I scream again, and suddenly, a loud crash comes from in front of me.

It scares me so much that for a moment, I freeze. Roger must stop too, because I don’t hear him running after me anymore.

Then the bushes up ahead part, and Flint stands there, rage and worry marring his handsome features.

“Sophie!” He shouts, rushing to my side.

“Roger, he was after me,” I pant, and he frowns down the path behind me.

I turn, but it’s empty now.

“He must have turned back when I screamed your name,” I tell him, and he nods.

“Come on. Let’s get you home.”

He wraps his strong arm around me and I let him lead me down the path to his cabin. My heart is still racing, but the fear is gone now that Flint is here. I’m panting, trying to suck in a deep breath.

Man, I’m out of shape.

His cabin comes into view ahead of us and I take it in. It’s a charming two-story log cabin, and it looks like it’s the only house for miles. Pine trees surround it, giving it even more privacy.

“Let’s get you warmed up,” Flint says as he leads me up the porch and inside.
