I narrowed my eyes at him. “Ha ha, whatever. I’m not that disagreeable.”
He chuckled, “Yes you are. But it’s part of your charm.” He stood up, “Anyway, let’s do lunch.”
I looked at the pile of reports on my desk again and thought about how ridiculously full my inbox was. “Can I get a raincheck?”
“Chris!” Robert said popping up. He walked in and shook Chris’ hand. “Good to see you! I didn’t know you were coming in today. I didn’t even know you were in town. Ready for another project?”
“No, I’m taking a bit of a break.”
“Slowing down a little?”
Chris nodded. “Yeah. I like to take breaks between contracts.” He turned to me, “Speaking of breaks, you ready to get lunch?”
“I don’t know I’m behind---”
Robert laughed, “Behind? Your version of behind is not being five steps ahead. Get out of here. Take a break.”
I sighed and picked up my purse. Apparently, I was outnumbered. “Fine.”
“Have fun!” he called as we walked out.
We got into the elevator to head to the bottom floor. I was about to ask him what he wanted for lunch when he surprised me by saying, “Finally, we’re alone.”
He moved towards me and confused, I took a step back, “What are you doing?”
“Kissing you, shhh, you’re ruining the moment.”
I opened my mouth to protest when he covered his mouth with my own. Initially, I panicked. What if there were cameras in the elevator?
I pulled away and said that.
He shrugged, pulling me back to him, “Then they can watch.”
He placed his hands on my butt and pulled me towards him and kissed me again. His hands moved up, and around my waist, pressing me against him as he deepened the kiss. It was sexy and spontaneous and when he pulled away as the elevator doors opened, I felt completely out of sorts.
Someone stepped on the elevator with us and stood awkwardly in between us. The door opened again, they stepped off the elevator and then the door closed.
“Where were we?”
He picked me up and pinned me against the elevator wall, surprising me. My eyes grew wide, “Put me down.” He kissed me again and I moaned as his hands came up and he fondled my breasts. Against my better judgement I wrapped my legs around his waist and then the bell dinged. I jumped down and away from him as the doors slid open.
I then followed him out, whispering, “I can’t believe you just did that.”
“Me? You were a willing participant.”
I laughed, but he was right. He was the carefree one. He always had been. He convinced me to do things I would never consider, and he’d been that way since we were kids. He brought out the fearless person in me. I loved that about him. In fact, there were a lot of things about Chris that I loved. I was really going to miss him when he moved on.
“What’s wrong?” he suddenly asked me.
“What?”
“Your vibe changed.”
I shrugged it off, I hated how perceptive he was when it came to my feelings. “Just thinking about those reports,” I lied.
Thankfully, he didn’t call me out. Instead, he said, “So what do you want? Sushi? Thai? Burgers?”
“Something light. Maybe a salad?”
