One day Notrie called me and told me some from his team had betrayed him. He burned them all not knowing who it was. I told him what I was doing and offered him a place with me. He took but he had one condition, he wanted to be my number two who was masked as my driver. That stems from his trust issues. I get it. So I told him okay and the rest is history.
Kissing the side of her head I wake her gently, not wanting her to startle. “Baby, wake up. We are here, Piccola.” She shifts slightly rubbing her face against my shirt. So fucking adorable. “Can you walk, angel, or do you need me to carry you?” Half asleep she raises her pouty mouth to mine and reaches up for a kiss. I make it chaste as possible because any more than that and Notrie will be asked to vacate the car.
“No, I can walk,” she says, her voice still raspy and sexy as fuck.
“Alright then, let’s go. She moves to open the door, but I grip her other wrist. She looks at me shocked and not sure what she did. I should reassure her, but I need her to know how serious I am about this. “Never open the door, yourself. You either wait for me to come out first and tell you it is safe, or you look at him.” I accentuate pointing to the front of the car. “This is Notrie. He is going to be in charge of your security. When he assembles your team, you will be introduced to them. Until then, it will be either him or me. Do you understand?” She puts her head down, a single tear falling from her eye at my reprimand and although my heart feels like an asshole, the protector in me and the man who would die without her now, will not be made to feel guilty.
“I’m sorry. I won’t do it again.” Okay now she sounds like a tortured puppy. That shit fuck with me. Slowly I lift her head, so she is looking at me.
“I am not angry with you, Piccola. I just need you to know how serious your safety is to me. It would either kill me or send me to the electric chair if something happened to you. Okay?” I see a hint of a smile and then she nods her head.
“Well, can’t have you dying can we?” The joke takes me by surprise, but it also sends my head roaring back in laughter.
“No, we can't angel. Alright let’s go.”
We walk hand in hand up to the door. I stop when I feel her hand trembling in mine. I take a second to hold her face. “Are you sure it is going to be okay?” she asks, biting her lip.
“Are you doubting your husband already angel?” I ask it with a smile on my face. She smirks and shakes her head.
“No. I’m sorry. I just… I just don’t want anything to happen.” I know what she is not saying. She doesn't want anything happening to me. Hell, neither do I.
Once she has calmed down, I ring the bell that would normally walk through, but it doesn’t seem the same now. We wait a few minutes and then the door is opened by Aurora, the lady of Miami and this house. She is giving me the ‘now you stepped in it’ look like a big sister would give and to be honest, she is my sister, even though it is not by blood.
“Aurora.” She frowns at me because she is not used to me being so formal with her.
“Cain.” I try to stop the smirk from the name she calls me. She says I am like Hollow Man, because I can get in and out of places without being seen. “And who is this?” She knows who she is, but she wants me to tell her.
“Asesina, this is my wife, Satine.” Her eyes get big when I call her my wife. She wasn’t expecting that. “Angel, this is my sister by choice, Aurora. Suddenly a little toddler comes up beside her and Aurora puts her hand on the baby’s head. “And this little bug is Star.” I lean down and pick up my little niece, tickling her tummy.
“Unc B.” That’s what she calls me. She can’t say my whole name yet.
“Hi. It’s nice to meet you both,” Satine says, rubbing the cheeks of Star and smiling at pregnant Aurora.
“Well, you both come on in. Cain, why don’t you go into the parlor. I think it is best for her to stay out here at first.” I knew this was a possibility, but everything in me is revolting against this idea but the truth is, I am outnumbered in this house and as fond as Aurora and I are of one another, she wouldn’t hesitate if it was an order. So, instead turn to my love and make her look at me.
“Lar... I thought you said it would be okay? Why can’t I come with you? Please just take me with you,” she begs, fear is written all over her face, it is ripping my chest out. I look at Aurora who is looking at her with compassion and I silently ask her to help me.
“Sweetie, I am sure it is just a formality. In this world, when you don’t follow orders you have to account for them. But, seeing as how he wifed you, I am pretty sure all will be well. Now, why don’t you come with me and let's get some tea. That's all I can have with this little boy in my stomach.”
I want to pull Satine in my arms but if I touch her I won't be able to do what I have to. Instead when he looks back at me, I smile and wink at her before turning and walking to the door. I don't knock because I don’t want them to sense insecurity in me. Instead I walk in and take a stroll to the bar cart. I fix myself a finger and sit in the chair with my back to the wall. It isn’t until I am settled that I see Giulia sitting in the chair next to Quan. Fuck.
“You insult me by sitting with your back to the wall. Do you think so little of me that you believe I would slice your head off behind your back?” Shit.
“I know better than that, Boss. I was simply…”
“You were trying to calculate the best route out if you needed to take me out, no?” I don’t bother responding because she knows the game.
“So, Larabee. I assume you are ready to discuss your proposition?” I nod my head, throwing back the scotch. “I’m listening.” Alright. So no shit.
“I brought her here as a formality so you can see she is fine before I take her home. My home.” That statement is met with silence, but in my peripheral vision, I see Giulia’s hand rubbing the handle of her sword.
“Is that so? And what makes you think this would be okay with me?” Giulia is tapping her nails on the still end of her weapon and in my mind I am feeling for mine. I have a gun at my back and one in the front under my shirt.
“It no longer matters if it is okay with you or not. She is now my wife. Discussion over. I have shocked him, and I see it because he stands and pulls his gun from his back. I don’t hold my hands up or move a muscle. If he kills me right now, Satine will be taken care of and in the end, that is all that matters.
“She’s what?” He cocks the gun back and I stand in my position.
“Hold on boys. Everyone calm down,” Giulia says, standing up. “Let’s all take one deep breath.” Quan lowers his weapon, but he doesn’t put it down. “Are you telling us you married her, LB?”
