She’s a memory—a fond memory of my past. Sawyer is my future.

Rumor leads me to an elevator, pulls out a little gadget from his pocket, and presses a few buttons. “That looks fancy.” I want to play with it.

“Yeah, it’s going to let us go undetected.” As the doors open, he presses the button. “Go.”

I hop in, and he slams the button for the third floor.

Whistling, I lean against the elevator doors, feeling lighter than I have in years, despite the circumstances. I can get through this. My future tastes sweet on my tongue. I’m so close to living that happily ever after I always dreamed of.

I am a romantic at heart. Those delicious romance books are to blame.

“Step to the side,” Rumor commands me.

I’ll allow it because he’s keeping me safe. Sliding to the side, I watch as the doors peel open, and then he presses the button again and peeks out. “Go.”

I hop, skip, and jump into a sterile as fuck hallway. It’s like one of those scary movie scenes. I hate it.

“Don’t move,” he warns me as he uses a key card to get into a side room. His voice rumbles out, and then there’s a shout.

I’m far too curious to stay still, so I open the door and peer in.

“Rumor,” I scold him as I glance at the guard slumped over a screen. “Is he dead?”

“Yes.” He doesn’t look up as his fingers fly over a keyboard.

“This is turning me on.”

He finally looks up. “Excuse me?”

“You, the guard, this whole thing is giving me a chubby.”

Rumor blinks at me before smothering a smile. There it is. Sexy as hell.

Locks click. “Is that our cue? Also, who are we rescuing?”

“Bryn,” he says, grabbing the gun from the delta he just offed.

“Fabulous. Which room is Sawyer in?” I can’t wait to see my girl.

“The one below us.” He comes around the edge of the station. “Listen, Sin.”

“Don’t worry, she’s ours, and my dad won’t take her.” I clap him on the shoulder. “Let’s get Bryn, and then we’ll get our girl and blow this place up. Who else is on this floor?”

“There are only two people we have to get,” he tells me and steps back into the sterile hall.

Something weird is going on here.

Rumor places his hand on the doorknob and looks back at me. Frowning, I watch as he opens the now unlocked door.

Time swells, and I feel like I’m moving in slow motion.

He said two people.

Two.

I approach the door, my eyes tracking Rumor as he steps to the side, revealing two people passed out side by side.

Both are naked.
