Rather than respond, Quin pressed a kiss to the top of my hair.
Macarius leaned against the doorframe, an unreadable expression on his face. “Gather the female’s things. She’s not staying here.”
Coda leaped to his feet, his hands balling into tight fists at his sides. “Macarius, she needs?—”
Macarius curled his lip in disdain. “I don’t care what she needs. It isn’t my problem.”
Rage bubbled in my stomach, but I tried to ignore it. He was right. I wasn’t their problem… but did he have to be such a jerk about it?
“The alpha asked us to—” Quin tried, only to be cut off by Macarius’s snort.
“Alpha Cillian knows my stance on sharing my space and my need for complete privacy. Take the female back to his home. I’m sure he will find another group of males who will happily take her in.”
“What if we refuse to return her?” Coda crossed his arms over his bare chest and faced off with the larger man.
Quin stepped forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Coda. They’d been ready to kill each other over me, and now they were ready to fight together to keep me. Wolves were complex and confusing creatures.
“Guys…” I tried to speak over the growls rumbling from all three men, but either they couldn’t hear me, or I was being ignored.
“Then you will pack your things and be out of this house by the time I return tomorrow evening. I will not sacrifice my solitude just so you two can get laid.” Without waiting for a response, Macarius turned on his heel and strode away.
A moment later, the front door slammed with enough force to shake the house’s foundation. Just when I was beginning to feel safe, the rug had been ripped from beneath my feet.
Strangely enough, I didn’t feel as worried as I probably should have. And I had a sneaking suspicion it had something to do with the glorious backsides of the two naked men in front of me.
Blowing out a sigh, I stood and tightened the blanket around my body. I squeezed between the brothers and made my way back into the destroyed living room. It took a few minutes, but eventually, I found my backpack beneath an overturned side table.
“What are you doing?” Coda asked.
I turned to find he’d pulled on a pair of loose basketball shorts. It was a shame, but the day had been full of disappointments, so I wasn’t surprised. Coda bent and, with a single hand, flipped the oversized couch back into an upright position.
I didn’t think I’d ever get used to how freakishly strong wolf shifters were or how physically imposing they were. Then again, maybe they only seemed huge in contrast to my petite form. Rabbit females in general tended to be on the small side, but I’d never given my size much thought until seeing the hulking size of the wolves.
I couldn’t help but wonder if they were above average everywhere. Of their own accord, my eyes drifted to the waistband of his shorts. Then lower.
The answer to my question was obvious, outlined by the thin material of the shorts. Swallowing hard, I pulled my gaze away and willed myself not to blush.
“Hey. Are you okay?” Quin caught my arm and gently turned me to face him.
I found myself at eye level with his abs. My traitorous tongue slid across my lip, wishing it was his tanned skin.
“I’m, um…” I stammered.
“Of course she isn’t,” Coda snapped, flopping down on the couch. “We’ve done a crap job of making her feel safe.”
Quin righted an armchair. Sitting down, he pulled me onto his lap.
“That’s not true. I do feel safe. Mostly, anyway,” I protested. “But I can’t say I understand anything that has happened since I woke up.”
Quin twisted a lock of my blue hair around his finger. “I’m sorry we scared you this morning. We let our wolves get out of control, and that shouldn’t have happened.”
I gave him a small smile. “It’s okay.”
“No, it isn’t,” Coda mumbled under his breath. “We’ve never been in this situation before, and we aren’t handling it well.”
My heart began beating faster, and my fingers curled tighter in my makeshift blanket-dress. “What situation? Do you mean your wolves acting a little weird with me?”
Maybe they would explain things. Not that it truly mattered, since I was leaving within the hour. That didn’t mean I didn’t want my curiosity satisfied first, though.
