Macarius shrugged. “They broke into my house. It would have been self defense.”
Cillian barked a laugh. “Mac, we both know every single wolf shifter in America would turn tail and run rather than face you in a fight. If predators refuse to stand up to you, no one would believe that rabbit shifters caused you to fear for your life.”
“I wasn’t afraid for my life, but I was terrified for Ellora’s life.” Macarius nuzzled my neck, pausing to breathe my scent into his lungs.
Rig sat on the couch with his arm around Monroe. “I would’ve helped kill them if you’d called me instead of Cillian.”
Monroe rolled her eyes at him. “We’re well aware of that fact, Rig.”
When Monroe looked away, Rig pretended to hold a phone up to his ear and mouthed ‘call me’ to Macarius.
“He’s as unhinged as you are,” I whispered to Macarius.
“Yeah, Rig and I have made some great memories over the years.” A lazy smile spread across my mate’s face.
His sexiness had my ovaries swooning. It was crazy to think that when I lived in the burrow, I never imagined that bad boys were my type.
There was something about men who could make everyone else in the room tremble in fear that made a girl feel protected. Not to mention the thrill I got every time their wolf instincts surfaced and they got possessive over me.
I’d gone from being ignored unless I needed to satisfy the rabbit shifters’ sexual or physical hunger, to having three men who couldn’t get enough of me. They kept finding reasons to touch me or brush against me, as though reassuring themselves I was safe while reminding me I wasn’t alone.
Pulling my mind back to the problem at hand, I tapped my fingers on the arm of the chair. “Cillian? Is it possible they’ll show up at the meeting my parents have set up?”
The alpha nodded. “I’d say it’s very likely they’ll be there. My wolves are following them, so I’ll know before you arrive if they’re in that vicinity.”
“You could always tell your parents you don’t want to meet now. I’m guessing you’re eager to put this behind you, but maybe you should put it off for a few days so you can rest,” Monroe suggested.
That was exactly what I wished I could do. Plus, I would’ve loved to put them off if for no other reason than to inconvenience them.
But getting the meeting over with today was for the best, because there was something I hadn’t shared with the group.
My heat was coming.
I thought I would’ve had more time before it hit, but maybe the stress of leaving the burrows and everything that had happened since I showed up on Monroe’s doorstep had brought it on sooner.
Just since waking up that morning, I’d noticed the changes had begun. My breasts were becoming fuller and my skin was glowing.
I could have chalked those up to finally being happy, but then the men’s kisses on my skin began to linger as they licked up the hint of sweetness I’d begun to exude. In the past hour, all three men had found a reason to smell me.
My last heat had hit me hard and fast, not giving me a chance to ease into it. And the last thing I wanted was to go into my second heat stressing out over what my ex-matched and parents were plotting.
Blowing out the breath I’d been holding, I made my decision. “I’ll do it, but tell them I will stay for half an hour and not a minute more.”
Monroe grinned. “I like the way you think!”
She hurried out of the room to accept the invitation to the meeting, and feeling relieved the decision was made, I sagged against Macarius.
“It will be over soon, my love.”
Actually, the real trouble would start soon. He didn’t know it, but the meeting was going to be a cakewalk compared to the strenuous demands of my heat.
I was like an Easter bunny, sweet but hollow on the inside… but if my heat got its way, soon I would be a cream-filled bunny.
An hour later, we stepped out of the elevator onto the twenty-fifth floor of a downtown hotel in the neighboring city. The hotel had been built near the airport and catered to businessmen who flew into town and needed to hold meetings during their stay.
Cillian hadn’t been pleased about us having the meeting there because it was owned by humans and he had less control over who could come and go from the hotel. I thought he was overreacting a bit, though.
I was being escorted by Macarius, Coda and Quin. And while I was in the meeting, Cillian, Monroe, Rig and Syrus were patrolling around the hotel.
