“You should wear this. For an, an engagement ring.” He pulled Grandpa Cho’s signet ring off his finger and held it out.
Felix stared down at it.
“Don’t tell me you’re all weirded out by the idea of being proposed to instead of the one doing the proposing,” Jonah teased, knowing it would rile Felix up.
And it did, but not exactly in the way he’d expected.
“What? No! Don’t be stupid. That wasn’t why I was hesitating,” Felix said scornfully. “But that’s Grandpa Cho’s ring! I know what this means to you.”
Jonah swallowed and stepped forward. “Well, you want Grandma to believe we’re engaged? This will make it believable.”
Felix froze, then nodded. “True.”
Jonah smiled at him. “Just remember, I get it back when we call this fake engagement off. And don’t you dare throw it to me in a huff and risk losing it down a storm drain or something.”
Chuckling, Felix took the ring from Jonah’s outstretched hand and slid it on his left-hand ring finger. “I promise. I won’t lose it, no matter how dramatic our breakup is. Besides, maybe you’ll be the one to call off our fake engagement.”
Laughing, Jonah nodded. “Maybe I will.”
But as they walked toward the locker room, he caught a glimpse of the gold ring on Felix’s finger and felt his heart tumble. If only that ring didn’t look so good on Felix’s long, slender fingers.
If only it didn’t look like it belonged there.
Shit.
Jonah was in so much fucking trouble.
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
“Hey, you have a second to talk before practice?” Felix said quietly as he approached his captain. There were only a few guys getting ready so far but most would be arriving soon.
Dustin looked between Felix and Jonah. “Uhh, sure. What’s going on?”
“We just need to speak to you privately about something,” Jonah said, his voice equally hushed.
“Of course. Video room?”
Felix nodded.
Matty and Colton shot them curious looks on their way through the locker room before returning to dressing in their gear.
Felix ignored them and followed Jonah and his captain out of the room.
Once they were in the video room and the door was shut behind them, Dustin turned, his brow furrowed. “What’s going on? You’re worrying me.”
“Oh.” Felix chuckled uncomfortably. “No, it’s not like that. I don’t need another trip to rehab or anything.”
A startled expression crossed Dustin’s face. “Oh, no, I didn’t think that. I thought you were going to tell me you had an injury or something that was going to keep you out of playing.”
“Nope,” Jonah said. “We’re both as healthy as can be expected.”
There were a few lingering twinges from the intense end to the regular season but on the whole, they were both doing well.
Felix licked his lips. “Jonah and I got engaged.”
“Oh!” Dustin’s expression brightened. “Well that’s great news! I’m so happy for you both—”
“It’s fake,” Jonah said hastily.
