Matty laughed. “Maybe just compared to the characters on Northdale Heights.”

They only moved when they couldn’t stand the beeping of the oven anymore and Matty stumbled to his feet, washed his hands, and pulled the chicken out.

They ate at the kitchen island, feet tangled together, and Matty couldn’t stop grinning.

The chicken parm was slightly overbaked but still tasted delicious.

“Hmm,” Antoni said, looping his arms around Matty’s neck, his brown eyes happy and warm. “Well, hopefully not too soon or too much. I do like you like this. I’m just a little wrecked from the tennis.”

And Matty grinned because that sounded promising for their future.

They took it easy the rest of the night, watching a movie, then reading in bed. Matty fell asleep to the sound of Antoni’s smooth, relaxing voice reciting the story to him.

After breakfast, they had a lazy morning cuddling on the couch, then worked out. It wasn’t love but it wasn’t so far off. Matty could see how they could get there with a little more time. So he pressed his nose into the soft space between Antoni’s neck and shoulder and breathed him in.

“Yeah,” Antoni said softly, lacing their fingers together. “Yeah.”

For a moment, Matty wondered if he’d said the love part aloud but he was pretty sure he hadn’t, so he just smiled.

They’d get there.
