“You fuck in cars often?” I raise a discerning eyebrow.
“Don’t you?” she questions, sarcastically.
I shake my head and laugh, crossing my arms over my chest. My wife is dirty and I love it.
“I’m trying to be a respectable man of society, but you keep corrupting me,” I tease, unable to keep the grin off my face.
“I was trying to take your mind off things,” she shrugs.
“You certainly accomplished that.”
Evangeline hooks her thumb towards the cop. “Should I call Alistair to pick you up from jail?” she muses with a sweet but cunning smile.
“You wouldn’t dare!”
“I bet he’d like that. Return the favor and all.” She folds her arms over her chest.
“He would gloat about it for weeks – months maybe,” I groan.
Evangeline shakes her head and laughs.
I look towards the trees again noticing they’re only a few feet away. “I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself if something happened to you.”
“I know.” She lays a hand on my arm and the heat of her palm cuts through the chilly winter air.
“I’m sorry you didn’t get the answers you wanted,” she apologizes.
“It’s not your fault.” I scratch the back of my head. “I guess I was hoping Ethel had a long memory, but even she didn’t know much about the arrest.”
“Maybe it’s not important. Maybe it doesn’t have anything to do with why your father didn’t speak to him,” she pauses. “Sometimes there isn’t any one defining moment, but a culmination of events in which parents disappoint us.”
Evangeline knows this better than anyone and maybe she’s right. I’m focusing on something that doesn’t matter anymore. “I just thought if I knew, I’d have a better understanding of my father.” I shrug.
The car door shuts, and I hear the crunch of the officer's shoes on the gravel as he rounds the car.
“I could arrest you for public indecency, but…”
“What?” I can’t help how high pitch my voice sounds.
“If you want to have sex, I suggest finding a hotel room, not the side of the highway,” he warns modestly. He looks at Evangeline and his cheeks turn an unnatural shade of pink, and not because of the crisp winter air.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I scoff, shaking my head.
“Panties on the floorboard say otherwise.”
I raise my eyebrows. “You didn’t put your panties back on?” I ask through gritted teeth.
She shrugs apologetically. “I didn’t have time.”
“Look, I have better things to do then arrest people for having a little fun in their car,” the officer explains. “However, if I catch you driving like a lunatic on my highway again, I won’t hesitate to give you a reckless driving ticket.”
I roll my eyes and slump against the trunk of the car.
The officer gets back in his truck, and as soon as he merges onto the highway, Evangeline doubles over in fits of giggles.
“You find this amusing?” I ask, but I can’t help liking the sound of her girlish giggles.
“The look on your face was priceless when he said public indecency! Oh, God, I thought you were going to faint,” she giggles.
