“It’s not impossible. After all, you’ll soon be my wife and the mother of my children.”
She tilts her head to look at me and smirks. “I didn’t know you had a sense of humor.”
I grip her ponytail and drag her head back against my chest and look into her beautiful eyes. “I’m not joking. I’ll have the enemy’s daughter as my prize.”
“Whatever helps you sleep at night.”
“Watch your tone, amore. I will not be so gentle and forgiving when we’re alone.”
“Then I’ll make sure to stay away from you.” She wrenches her head back and then adds, “Until my father can get me.”
“He will never get you. I’ll kill him if he tries.” I release her from my grip, feeling irrationally angry that she just won’t surrender to my will so easily. Worse, she wants to be with her father. A man I want six feet under. I swing my leg over her body and walk away to the deep end of the pool to cool down.
Standing at the edge, I dive straight into the water and then come up to look for Anna who deserves my attention. My obsession with Lucy has got to get under control. It’s clear Lucy’s got her lust for me reined in.
“Sweetling, how well can you swim?”
“I’m practically a fish.”
“Are you a mermaid?”
“How did you know?” she asks, giving that large toothy grin of hers.
“I can see it in your eyes, princess.” For the next hour, we swim around each other, having mini races from the short end of the pool to the other side and staying on the shallow end.
Vittorio steps out, interrupting us, needing me for business, whispering the matter in my ear. I hold in my anger and turn to my niece who can tell that I’m going to end our fun.
“You’re leaving?” she asks with her elbows on the edge of the pool.
“Sorry, Anna. I’ll see you at dinner.”
“It’s okay. I need to transform into my human form.”
“You have legs? That’s so cool.” I grab Anna, spinning and lifting her out of the water, before sitting her on the edge of the pool. She wiggles her legs.
“See, here they are.”
Lucy’s shadow distracts me for a moment, but I nod and grab Anna’s toes. “Wow, I can’t believe it.”
She hands a towel to Anna and then I jump out and she actually has one for me. I lean in and kiss her cheek. “Learning to be a good wife already,” I whisper.
“Asshole.”
“Always learning.” I wink, pat her ass, and walk away.
Leaving Lucy is harder than I thought, but I have matters that require my attention outside the house.
“What happened to the shipment?” I ask Vittorio after I change into a clean suit.
“Stolen.”
I take a deep breath and then brush my hair. I could kill a son of a bitch right now. Olivero better be ready with my merchandise or he’s as good as done.
Standing there adjusting my holstered gun, I stare at my second, waiting for more information. When he doesn’t say anything, I turn to look up at him and he’s nervous as if he knows I’m in a dangerous humor.
Violent rage pumps through my veins right now. First, my future wife sides with my mortal enemy, and now someone dares to fucking take me away from her while stealing my shit. “And do you know by whom?”
He stiffens up his spine and speaks. “According to the shipping yard, they thought our men moved it, but we arrived and it was already gone.”
