I barged in without knocking, then ran over to shake her awake. Cy flipped, grabbed me, and before I knew it, I was lying under her with a knife to my throat. She leered down at me before realizing what had happened.
Tossing the knife away, she said, “Mine! What the fuck are you doing?”
I couldn’t answer since my arms were now being pinned down. I wiggled free, and she let me, sitting back so there was room between us. I sat up and told her someone was at the door and Odie had sent me to get her.
She jumped out of bed, throwing on baggy pajama pants to match her oversized T-shirt. I was still in the leggings and T-shirt from yesterday with fuzzy socks to help keep my toes warm in the cool cabin.
As I hopped off the bed to follow her, I noted that her rough handling didn’t upset my shoulder or my ankle, meaning I was finally getting back to normal. A small smile graced my lips as I left her bedroom, but it fell when I saw Oliver standing next to Odie in the doorway.
His sharp look of a dark gray and navy business dress clashed with Odie’s deep purple workout leggings and black muscle shirt. Add Cy to the mix with her ratty band tee and rubber duck covered bottoms and it was a sight to see.
I stepped back into the hallway before anyone could fully notice me, but I wanted to hear what they were saying. I pressed myself against the wall, hoping I could make a break for it if needed.
“Bring her out. We don’t have time for this,” Oliver commanded as if he would be able to take both of them on. The only thing keeping him in power was Gerard and probably whatever Alpha lot he had with him.
“Not until you give me all the information. Why didn’t you call? We would have brought her and Ellie,” Odie ground out. I had a feeling she really wanted to punch him.
“I wasn’t given any. Gerard sent me for Carmine. That is all.” Now I wanted to punch him.
“Not happening.” There she was again with the sweet side. “She was given to us for protection, and given the rules you very well know, we will be the ones to escort her to the trial. She is in our care until then. Gerard can fuck off. He knows how this works. Send us the information, and we will meet you there.”
“I’m afraid that won’t be happening. I will take her by force if I have to.” I gasped at the sinister sound of his voice, and everything went silent.
I stupidly peered around the corner in time to see Oliver’s form break and twist into a large wolf. He had a fucking relic. Fuck me.
I knew they wouldn’t let him take me even with the new power in play, but that didn’t stop me from bolting for the back door and taking off. I knew this area well enough that it would hinder him a little. However, his new form negated that.
My socked feet hit the ground as wood shattering came from behind me. Odie and Cy grunted and yelled, but I blocked it all out. I had to get away from him, give them time to do something. He wasn’t going to wait, but taking off again was a terrible idea. There was nowhere to hide. To be fair, there wasn’t anywhere to hide inside either, and given how easily he crashed through the front door and living room, it really didn’t matter. Maybe this was a way to give me some sort of hope even when there was none.
Seconds past, I felt like I was running through Jell-O. No amount of distance would be enough.
The back door crashed open, and I knew my time was up. I’d be taken in and charged with a crime I never committed.
I looked up at the sky, the rising sun beaming down its rays of light, hoping this wasn’t the end.
Chapter 16
Mine
Since we came out here every day that it wasn’t storming, the path was clear of branches, fallen logs, and large stones. I didn’t trip or fall or even hesitate as I ran with a wolf at my back. I shoved through the Jell-O feeling, hell-bent on making it out of here.
Too bad none of it helped.
Oliver tackled me to the ground, pounding my face into the dirt and sending stars around my head. I groaned and tried to push myself up, no matter how useless that action might be. His paw landed in the middle of my back, sending me down again and knocking the air out of my lungs. I huffed in the dirt and anything else that was littering the forest floor.
I coughed as I felt his claws dig in, and he pressed his weight on top of me. I slowly lost the ability to breathe, then he was gone, shredding the back of my shirt in the process. He yelped as he hit the tree, and I heaved in the precious oxygen.
“Run, Mine!” Cy yelled, and for a split second, I wondered where Odie was, but I didn’t have time for that. She was a big girl that could handle herself.
I wobbled to my feet, my head still reeling from the takedown. Cy battling and holding back Oliver distracted me as I took a few steps, then a few more. I picked up speed into a jog that rattled my brain with every step. Still, I didn’t stop.
Then Cy screamed in agony, and my body stopped and turned of its own accord. She lay on the ground with Oliver looming over her. At first, I thought he was going to finish the job, but he walked past her, ignoring her curses.
His golden eyes landed on me, and I was stuck. Cy called out to me again, pleading for me to run. I wish I knew where they kept weapons or if they had any in the first place. One shotgun blow to the head would do it. Maybe that’s where Odie was.
We kept each other’s gaze as he stepped forward and I stepped back, but with our size differences, my steps were useless. He would be on me again in no time, so I did what any sane person would do. I flipped him off and bolted. I knew some trees were climbable, and if I got high enough, maybe he’d have to change back to get me. I could take on Oliver the man. A heel to the nose would knock some fucking sense into him.
All plans were futile and only existed to keep me from panicking. I knew I was doomed. Without Odie and Cy helping me, I was done for. They couldn’t take him down, so what was I supposed to do?
