"Hello, doctor, what's the—"
"Are you with Diane right now?"
He blinked, but there was already a creeping feeling of dread going up his spine.
"I am, but—"
"All right. I want you to move away from her immediately," Dr. Ramamurthy said. "It turns out that Diane has been exposed to the virus."
"Wait, how—"
"One of the maids who tends to Diane's rooms. We're still tracing and trying to figure things out. Right now, we need you both isolated from each other."
"I need to go—"
"No," Dr. Ramamurthy said sternly. "You created the palace to be a place where we could actually enact best practices, and you have emphasized again and again that that is what I need to enforce. If you were other people, you would be able to isolate together. You are not."
"Doctor, Diane is—"
"One of my aides is calling Diane. She is being appraised of the situation right now."
Samyar looked up, feeling as if the world was tilting underneath him.
As he did, the door to the bedroom, where he had been with Diane, shut with a loud click and he could hear her crying behind it.
