I yanked on my bonds, but the zip ties along my wrists and ankles wouldn’t give.
“We were never family.” I notched my chin, bracing for my fate.
A booming roar sounded outside the room. Snarls layered with the sharp retort of gunfire and screams.
I drew my final breath.
The blade halted inches from my chest.
“Fuck!” my uncle snarled, running for the door instead.
It burst apart as he reached it.
Wood shattered, and with a deafening roar, Sin crashed through.
Chapter 44
Starlit eyes raked over me, eclipsing with dark rage as they leaped to my uncle.
The old hunter was already moving. His blade sliced through Sin’s chest as the demon reared back just in time to avoid the strike turning lethal.
“Sin!” I screamed, yanking on my restraints, but it was no use. Too many plastic ties held me. The tight angles making all force impossible.
I didn’t have time to feel the shock at Sin’s arrival. Panic consumed my world as he traded blows with the monster who’d dominated my life.
Rage consumed the demon as he snarled, raking claws along my uncle’s arm. “You’re the spineless maggot that’s been beating and starving her.”
“Training her,” my uncle sneered. “She’d be dead if it weren’t for me.”
“You’re more evil than any demon.” I thrashed harder in my restraints, but nothing budged.
“Well, you should have trained the others better. I killed every human here.” A cruel smirk etched his features as he darted his tail forward to stab the old hunter in the leg.
A distinct boom sounded.
Sin jerked back before his blow could land, blood spraying from his shoulder.
I gasped, helpless to do anything but watch as he staggered upright with a snarl, tail twitching as he watched both the door and my uncle like a cornered predator.
“Not all,” a familiar voice drawled.
Leo shuffled into the room, pistol shaking in his raised hand. Bloodstained gauze wrapped around his middle, the bare skin of his chest too-pale.
A violent smirk curved my lips. “Not looking so hot, Leo. What’s the matter? Can’t handle a little prick all of a sudden?”
“You again.” Sin snorted, unfazed by the fresh wound seeping blood down his chest.
“I could say the same.” Leo grunted. His eyes flicked to me for a millisecond. “I hope some demon dick was worth dying for.”
The icy façade of my uncle cracked. “So you’re the monster corrupting my niece?” The hunter prime snarled, switching the grip on his blade, holding it along his forearm and slashing out.
Sin evaded him, spiked tail lashing side to side in threat.
A cruel twist held his lips in a familiar gesture that made my heart ache. “Corrupting, huh? We’re a little past that, old man. I love her.”
I sucked in a gasp, eyes flying up to Sin’s. They met mine, honest and vulnerable, for a single moment.
My uncle jolted as if struck. Sin took advantage, darting forwards to finish him with a swipe of claws aimed for his throat.
