The rest of alpha squad and his usual groupies lounged around him.

Tia, the only other female besides myself to make it up the ranks into alpha squad, sat closest. Her manicured hand fell away from his knee as he stood slowly, interrupting whatever Jayce had been about to say with a harsh scrape of his chair.

She shot me a venomous glare that I chose to ignore. I’d wanted to be her friend, thinking we could look out for each other in this male-dominated organisation, but she’d always seen me as competition.

My dumb heart ached at the sight of my ex-fiancé, the hidden wounds he’d left stubbornly outlasting the physical ones I’d gained from the incident that had destroyed us.

We’d only been broken up for a few weeks, and he’d shown zero signs that it affected him.

Sometimes I could barely look him in the eye.

He sauntered over with the lethal grace of a trained fighter, effortlessly intimidating with his steroid-pumped bulk and the three slashes from ear to temple where a demon had scarred him.

Jayce jerked forward as the bigger man patted him on the shoulder a fraction too hard.

“She’s got you there, bud. Let poor Dozer here get back to her evening.” He shot me a condescending smirk. “Maybe she’s got a date to get to.”

A harsh titter fell from Tia’s glossy lips, underlined by sniggers from the rest of alpha squad, as if the idea that I could be seeing someone was that ridiculous.

I ground my molars so hard that I worried I’d need to see a dentist.

Leo had made it clear when we’d broken up that he didn’t care about me. In all honesty, I wasn’t sure he ever had.

Still, the bastard had made sure none of the other hunters would look twice at me. Spreading some bullshit about how I was still madly in love with him and he wouldn’t take too kindly to anyone taking advantage of me when I would obviously only be hooking up with them to make him jealous.

As usual, it was all about his ego. I was just an accessory to it.

It made me want to go out and fuck the nearest stranger, just to prove I could, but it was bad enough when my uncle threatened me with the lives of people I didn’t know.

“Yup, met this cute guy on one of the dating apps.” I flashed Leo a shit-eating grin. “We’re meeting at his place.”

His square jaw ticked, as if the thought of me with someone else irritated him.

A kernel of hope unfurled in my chest before I stomped it out.

He’d left me for dead. I would have taken on a horde of demons to save him. It had literally been our job, and he hadn’t fought for me.

But he had for Tia.

A self-assured smirk curved her plump lips, as if she could hear my thoughts.

My ex might hunt down monsters infiltrating our world, but something just as evil lurked behind those dark-blue eyes.

“Well, try not to die tonight.” I gave Leo and Jayce a mocking salute, and before either could spout more venom, I sidestepped the pair and strode for the exit.

Leo’s voice boomed behind me, “Did I say you could stop!? Fight, beasts, or I’ll execute you both.”

My heart stuttered at the cold cruelty, but I couldn’t free them.

I was just as trapped.

Chapter 6

Spilling out into the night, I sucked down air, letting the chill calm my frantic pulse.

Boots crunched broken glass as a pair of hunters patrolled the rear of hunter HQ, dark coats hiding the weapons I knew were strapped beneath.

The men halted a few feet away, content to watch me from the shadows. One dug a phone from their pocket, shooting off a quick message.
