“Yes, poison. I killed a man for trying to touch what was mine. And I’d do it again, in a fucking heartbeat.”
Before I could process his words, his lips slammed against mine, taking my mouth in a rough kiss.
Vicious. Claiming. Sinful.
Chapter 31
Sin ended the kiss, his sharp fangs dragging over my lower lip in sensual threat. The moment he pulled back, dizziness slumped me against the wall. I fought just to breathe in the wake of his intensity.
The pearlescent stars in his eyes glowed. Hunger and anger twined through his expression. His arms caged me in, keeping me trapped against the corridor wall with the heat and strength that radiated from him.
His tail flickered, swaying back and forth behind him, the sharp spikes on the heart-shaped tip glinting with menace.
The way he kissed me and threatened to kill me was sending some serious mixed signals.
Possible red flag.
Gaze never leaving mine, he knocked back the last of his drink and set the empty on a ledge beside me.
He smirked, jerking his chin at the glass I clutched in my hand. “Finish it, poison. Maybe when I sip from you later, I’ll get even more high off you.”
I obeyed, downing the rest of my gin and tonic. Not because he’d told me to but because I needed something to quench the thirst Sin had left me with.
“What are you doing here?” I blurted, curiosity getting the better of me. My cheeks warmed as he raised a horned brow, but I ploughed on. “Any survivors will be coming for you. For us. If you were smart, you’d be on the next flight out of here, or jumping through the nearest portal back to hell.”
A muscle feathered in his jaw. “I’m looking for someone.”
I frowned, the puzzle pieces sliding together in my head. “So that’s why you were captured? You let them take you so you could look for a particular demon at hunter HQ?”
He blinked, obviously not expecting my response.
I snorted. “Don’t look so surprised, demon. I’m meant to be smart, remember?” I threw his words from earlier back in his face. “Obviously, they weren’t there, or you wouldn’t be in a demon nightclub trying to get a hot tip.”
His eyes narrowed on me. “It wasn’t easy getting information inside your torture den, since all the demons are constantly being killed, but at least I could rule out him being there while I was.”
I nodded, filing away the information for later use. At some point, Sin would make a mistake. One that I’d use to escape him. I hadn’t spent years trying to get away from my uncle just to be captured by a demon when I’d finally been given a real shot at freedom.
Sin had done me a favour by taking me with him. Hopefully, my uncle was either dead or thought I was.
Now I could leave behind hunters and demons and violence altogether. Carve out a new life like a regular human.
I’d have to start off-grid, probably in the remote forests of eastern Europe, but after a few months, maybe I could find somewhere that reminded me of my hometown, with its rolling countryside hills and lush forest edging a bustling city.
Even as a dumb part of me grieved the loss of vividness from a certain monochrome beast, the desperate fantasy crystallised inside my mind.
I just had to survive playing with demons long enough to get there.
“Come on, before that big brain of yours gets you killed.” Sin smirked, flashing the sharp tip of a fang. “By me.”
“Yes, almighty demon overload.” I snorted, rolling my eyes at him despite the very real threat he posed to my health. Living in constant fear had a way of skewing your reactions to it.
He chuckled. “Careful, poison. I might like you playing the obedient little toy for me.”
I flashed him a sarcastic smile and brushed past him, avoiding the three spikes on his shoulder.
Something warm wound around my wrist. His tail circled me, velvety smooth skin so dark compared to my anaemic paleness.
His heat covered my back. “I’m not letting you go anywhere without me, poison,” he whispered in my ear. “Someone might try to touch what’s mine again.”
