“Most scientists aren’t paid well,” I sniffed. “We sacrifice for the greater good.”

I’d wanted to taunt him, but in the process, I’d sounded a little too much like my uncle. The thought made me want to vomit in my mouth.

The demon scoffed, “Spoken like such a human.” A wicked grin sharpened his expression. “But I meant with our money. I was moving to the human realm, remember? I already have ID to match my glamour and enough funds for us to live on comfortably for years.”

My eyes practically bugged out of my head. Not only was the demon richer than me, but I didn’t have any ID myself. My uncle had my passport and driving licence—just another way he kept me under his thumb.

But Sin had also spoken as if his money was mine too.

I didn’t know how to feel about anything. I was emotionally and physically drained.

Leaving on the ridiculous lingerie dress, I pulled away from Sin and settled fully under the covers, turning my back on him. There was no chance in his home world that I was taking off the last barrier between us, however flimsy it was.

His sinuous tail moved as I did, not once choking me.

I froze as he slid in behind me with a low growl. Heat enveloped me as he wrapped his arm around my waist, thawing me a little as he pulled me back against his firm body, propping his chin on top of my head.

I hated that some of the tension left my body with him holding me like this. Like I was safe. I was being spooned by a monster, I should be spitting and clawing till my last breath.

He shifted even closer, and a hard length pressed against my arse.

“W-What are you doing?” I squirmed, embarrassingly both nervous and needy in an instant.

“For security,” he whispered, wrapping me tighter in his intimate embrace until I felt like he touched me everywhere.

“Security is your dick poking me in the arse?” I hissed, trying to twist around to face him, but he held me fast.

“Keep your enemies close and all that.” His low chuckle vibrated through me. “Though, if you want me to take your arse next, all you had to do was ask.”

My eyes shot wide. “That’s not… I didn’t…”

The bastard had me too flustered to even string together a coherent insult.

“Sleep, poison. If you keep enticing me, I’m going to think you want to be fucked by a demon.” He leaned down, and his forked tongue flicked out, tracing the shell of my ear. “Again.”

Chapter 33

Sunlight filtered through the paned windows, haloing the monster.

The demon of shadow and starlight perched opposite me on an upholstered chair at the ruined dining table, making both look comically small. Sin leaned over a ceramic bowl of porridge, a tiny spoon clasped between his ivory claws.

I couldn’t look too closely at the furrows carved into the polished wood without blushing.

Last night, I’d slept in the arms of my enemy. Somehow, I’d woken peacefully instead of my usual routine, with pleas for mercy on my lips. Sin had kissed my hair and slipped from bed, disappearing downstairs to bang around in the kitchen while I pretended to be asleep like a coward.

The tiger-lily tattooed on my wrist had felt heavier than usual, a constant reminder of my father’s last words—never let them see you weak, Tiger-lily.

I’d dragged myself out of bed pretty quick after that, showering and changing into someone else’s clothes from the wardrobe. Thankfully, I’d found a belt to cinch their smallest jeans in tight, since I resembled a stick more than a person lately.

“Finish every bite for me, poison. I’d hate to watch you collapse like a dusty skeleton again.” The demon sneered at me over the clawed-up table, his malice as familiar as breathing. “Though I suppose this time, I could at least catch you. Wouldn’t want you to accidentally kill yourself by hitting your pretty little head on something,” he mused, vicious expression gentling into a cruel smirk.

I deserved his hatred, now more than ever, since I’d got someone important to him killed. But it still pissed me off.

Just another sin to add to the list. I probably wouldn’t be getting any presents from Santa this year.

“Let me guess.” I waved my spoon at the demon, pulling a sour face. “Because my death is yours to deliver? Your demon is showing.”

He chuckled. “See? Such a smart little human.”
