A niggle of guilt wormed through me, and I stabbed it ruthlessly. I was his captive. If anything, I should be cheering at the turn of events.
Any self-respecting fighter would have seen this a mile off, anyway.
Arsen’s hand shook slightly, and I took a moment to assess him. Bruises marred his throat, half-hidden by his shirt collar. Scabbed cuts and angry scratches lined his neck and hands.
Leo, on the other hand, looked perfectly unscathed, apart from the old scars slashing his temple. Somehow, he’d not been injured in the raid.
Demons were stronger and faster than us. There was no way they’d failed to land a single blow if he’d been in the melee.
“I took you for many things, Dozer, but never a traitor,” Leo sneered, his glare stabbing me for a brief second.
My ex-fiancé had me all kinds of twisted up inside.
I scowled, stepping further from Sin so his thick tail pulled taut between us. “You think I’m here by choice? He’s a fucking demon, Leo. What am I supposed to do, unarmed and alone?”
He shook his head, blond locks falling into his face artfully. “This is because of Tia, isn’t it?”
My lips parted, rage burning me up from the inside. “You think I’m working with a demon because you cheated on me?” My voice rose in pitch, but I was too angry to care that I was practically screeching behind a crowded pub. “I’m. A. Fucking. Prisoner.” I snarled. “Just like I’ve always been. Not that you cared back then, either.”
He flinched at my venom, but lifted his chin, glaring right back at me as he kept the gun on Sin. “Grow up, Liliana. You could have left me at any time.”
“Once again, it’s not always about you.” Little pinpricks of pain dug into my palms as my fists curled at my sides.
Sin watched the two of us, a cruel smirk playing on his lips like my emotional pain was so damn enjoyable.
Maybe the evil parasite was more than just a blood demon.
Sin released me and darted forwards, slamming Arsen’s hand aside just as he popped off a shot. It went wide, pinging into the bricks somewhere to my left.
Before I could react, Sin buried his fangs in Arsen’s neck, using the hunter’s struggling body as a shield from Leo.
The monster drew back with bloodied fangs to grin at the other hunter.
His tail lashed out, wrapping my wrist and dragging me to his side.
“Sorry to interrupt the lovers’ spat.” The demon glanced between me and my ex with a sinful smirk. “Please, continue.”
Arsen whimpered in Sin’s grip, and his thrashing slowed before he slumped, limbs dangling uselessly.
I assumed he was still alive, given Sin needed people to question. The dead made for poor conversationalists.
Leo snarled, his gun aimed steadily at Sin through the unconscious hunter doubling as a shield. My ex couldn’t take the shot without hitting Arsen, but I wouldn’t put it past the maniac to try.
He’d always thought very highly of his skills. In all departments.
“Great, Dozer. Now you’ve killed Arsen too,” Leo growled.
I raised a brow. How was this a me issue?
Other than a little anger, Leo didn’t seem that upset. He ignored the demon like he wasn’t even there, glaring daggers at me instead.
I cocked a hip. “Are you high? Or is your head just so far up your own arse you can’t think past the bullshit?”
“Fuck you. You’re the damn hunter princess of Riverside, pampered and pretty,” he scoffed, full of bitterness. “Your uncle has done so much for you, and this is how you repay him? Repay us?” He shook his head, backing away through the alley, pistol raised.
Normally, a hunter would strike first and talk never, but Leo had been outmanoeuvred by a psychotic demon and his not-so-willing sidekick.
I batted my lashes, twirling a lock of my plain hair around a finger. “Aww, you think I’m pretty?” I drawled, putting on my best vapid expression.
