Sin’s dark chuckle filled the air. The bastard was probably seconds away from grabbing some popcorn to watch the train wreck that was my life.
Leo glared harder at me, if that were possible.
“You were once,” he sneered. “Now you’re just a skinny, used-up whore.”
My own dark chuckle spilled out, layering over the growl spilling from Sin. “How am I the whore, when you were the one fucking around behind your fiancé’s back?”
“Because you’re the one spreading your legs for evil,” the hunter snarled.
“You’d better shoot, human. Or I’ll tear your spine out through your throat and flay you with it.” Sin’s voice had dropped to that silky octave that spelled danger.
I side-eyed the monster. Clearly, he was losing patience with this game.
Leo sneered. And pulled the trigger.
A distinct pop sounded, muffled by the silencer, but no pain followed.
Sin grunted, and cruel laughter spilled from him, louder than the gunshot. My heart squeezed. An exit wound marked his shoulder.
The bullet had missed both Arsen and me. Just barely.
Pistols weren’t known for their accuracy, and Leo wasn’t exactly at close range. He’d seen the odds of both a hunter and his ex-fiancé dying and had taken the shot anyway.
My hands curled into fists. “Leo, you fucking bastard.” Anger strangled my vocal cords until the curse came out as more of a whisper.
A smug grin wrinkled his scars.
The demon’s chuckle simmered low. “Sorry, I should have specified. Shoot well.”
Leo’s sneer dropped as Sin burst into motion. The demon released Arsen and me, racing towards my ex. Leo turned and ran, shooting back wildly over his shoulder.
I yelped as a ricochet pinged and sliced through my forearm, knocking me back a step. Pain sang through my flesh in the next breath.
Sin turned, eyes wide. He scanned me from head to toe instead of chasing his prey.
“I’m fine!” I called out, straightening with a wince.
Sin’s eyes darkened to pure black, and he roared at Leo’s retreating form disappearing around the edge of the building.
The demon stalked back towards me, kicking the unconscious hunter out of his path.
Rage contorted his features until he was almost unrecognisable. Purely demonic.
“You’re. Hurt,” he growled, reaching for my injured arm.
I chuckled, ignoring the line of pain burning across my forearm. I’d had much, much worse. “It’s barely a scratch. Us humans aren’t that weak. It’ll be gone in a week or so.”
He bared his fangs. “Unacceptable.”
“Sorry if my body’s natural abilities aren’t quick enough for you,” I drawled.
He nodded like he accepted my apology, and my mouth popped open in shock.
Before I could berate the idiotic demon, he brought my arm up to his lips. His forked tongue slid out, lapping the blood running slowly down my skin. A look of bliss stole the rage from his carved features.
I watched, stunned, as he gently cleaned the wound, a complete change to how he’d roared like a feral beast just seconds ago.
Dark blood seeped from the bullet wound in his shoulder. He’d gained another through his bicep, but as I watched, they both closed, until only ashen scars graced his charcoal skin.
