Legging it back of the vehicles she checked what ammo they had, grabbed a couple of packs and started filling them with munitions from the vehicles. Strapping her guns to her thigh holders, knives in her back holster, her bow and arrows, she loaded up.

She was part of this damn team whether Marcus liked it or not.

Dragging the now full backpacks to the edge of the tail gate she slipped one through her arms and did it up, then took the weight grabbing the other one placing it in front of her her arms through the staps and using the binoculars, made her way towards the gun fire. Sound travelled. She knew they had to be a good couple of hours maybe three out. What she needed to do was stay ahead of them and be ready.

Hoping the KC didn’t catch them before reaching her.

Fuck that…..

Jogging as fast as she could keeping a look out for anything unexpected, she made good time, the gun fire slowing but coming nearer.

Feeling she was near enough, she dumped one pack and started to unload it. Placing the munitions where she needed, giving it her best guess, then moving ahead marking the tree line some 400 yards out from that in a wide spread. It was an old Indian trick. Spread out the marks telling them to watch for instructions, then marking and funnelling her team into a safe area before the danger point. She knew the SC’s would understand it, they’d trained with it enough to know.

Ahead as far as she dared, she started marking in a spread, then as she fell back, she marked pushing them into the safe zone on either side laying trip wired mines outside of it and kept layering them on both sides back towards her party favour. Satisfied at 100ft from where she’d dumped her pack, that the trap she’d set was ready, she laid the entire area right and left of the save passage with trip wire mines, adding to the party then moved back to her surprise welcome party. All the while, checking her binoculars, for the fight that was coming closer.

Her main concern was for them being outflanked. KC’s weren’t stupid. She got that itch that she’d learnt not to ignore, needing to check it out, they weren’t going to make it that easy. Leaving her last mined tree, she moved quietly through the forest, finding an appropriate tree that would suit her purpose and climbed it. It was a good lookout post. She had no trouble finding her boys with the gun flashes heading her way fighting their pursuers through the trees coming towards her. She zoomed in.

Some of her boys were being carried but they were all there. Her gut tightened.

Fuck.

She watched for a while, the enemy was a good 100 yards plus behind them, then to the right and left of them some 150 yards out, she spotted two smaller groups spitting off from the back of the main group and moving fast with them. That was going to be a problem and exactly what she was worried about. Noting their positions and direction she climbed down. There was nothing she could do to help her boys other than what she’d done, but she could help take out the other two groups. Moving quickly down to the ground, she made for her other pack, loaded up on more munitions heading to the left in what would be the direction they’d be coming to outflank them.

From their angle she took an educated guess as to where they would be intercepting and placed the munitions with trigger wires just like the others in an over lapping widespread. Only this time, leaving no gap or signal of a safe zone. Legging it to the pack once more, she did the same to the right. By the time she was done they were almost on her.

Taking her position, she kneeled ready breathing heavy hearing fire almost on her. Cupping her hands, she let out her signal knowing that by now, they should have been following her signals for some time. She waited, then repeated it.

Grabbing the binoculars, she looked over at where they should come through, listened and gaining her breath back. Seeing movement up ahead. Spike came into view from the trees on point. She whistled low and he zoomed in on her and she gave the signal ‘safe zone’. Comet came through behind him with several others. Two being half carried. Crash came through next firing behind him with three more. She tried to keep calm as more came through. Some limping. It was getting close. Hawk appeared carrying another. Then the rest of their SCs, Marcus bringing up the rear, they were all firing like crazy into the trees behind them. She whistled loudly letting them know to run like hell as she let go of the first shell and the ground barrage, she’d set up started.

Welcome to the party!

Dropping one after the other, she peppered the forest behind them as they moved faster towards her no longer having to fire. Then the first of her tree-based mines lit up behind her boys. She grinned as one after the other exploded behind them. The barrage sending the KCs into the trees around it where her surprise waited. Boom. Boom. Boom. If the fire barrage didn’t get them the tree mines or falling trees would.

Then the left exploded further back, KC’s coming to their colleague’s aid. She grinned as her team reached her while she continued to drop ammo into the launcher, and the right exploded too. “Vehicles are close, go,” she called out indicating which way to go. Marcus came running straight to her. Grabbed her face and kissed her hard, looking in her eyes before moving on with his men. Confused she kept dropping bombs until the last of her shells were spent then gave her uncles a nod, grabbing her bow and arrows, they all moved out chasing after their main group.

Now in the rear, guns out they were scanning the area as they ran. Out of nowhere, a KC came rushing at them through the trees from behind. He was damaged and they fell into their automatic fighting routine. The quad fired distracting him and she threw a knife getting him in the throat. He went down but not before three more came running at them. They were injuried too but still coming. They each took on the one nearest them hugging the tree line making it harder for them. Hawk and Spike went in hand to hand, Comet and Crash firing, into the other two as she pulled her bow and let loose several explosive arrows into four more that came out of the trees. They took the Cyborgs apart, she turned to fire on the ones with Hawk and Spike, but they were already down.

Picking her up Hawk held her up so she was up looking over his shoulder her bow at the ready, as they all ran faster than she could for the vehicles.

When they got to where she’d left them. They were gone. She didn’t think they would still be there, not with the injured needing to get out quick and some of them would need to lay down. As they hit the area, Marcus and three other Cyborgs came out of the trees and Hawk put her down.

“We still have some behind us but their being careful now.” Moon grinned.

Marcus looked her over. “You hit?”

“No I’m good.”

“Let’s go. We need to move. One of the Humvee’s will be waiting.” He knelt in front of her. “Get on.”

“What?”

“Your quad is exhausted. They carried the day, but it cost them. Get on.” She looked at Hawk and the others. They gave her a nod.

“Why didn’t you say?”

“We’re good little bit but running with you for another half hour will not be quick and we need to move.” Hawk told her looking around. He was worried she could see it.

She didn’t need any more telling and climbed onto Marcus’s back without arguing. His hands took her legs as he pulled them around his waist and held them in the front making sure she was secure before taking off running. The others taking up the rear. Keeping her eyes peeled she kept a look out as he ran. Her core rubbing up against his back didn’t make concentrating easy or his hands flexing on her thighs. She heard the odd bit of gun fire behind her and knew her quad had engaged. The other three were around her and Marcus not stopping. If she didn’t know better, she’d say she’d just been rescued out of the area. As the car loomed into focus, she let out a sigh of relief.
