Unlikely, he’d have moved off and pulled them away, so his injury was getting worse by the minute. Her uncles came back in. “It’s a trap, allowed us in and now it’s closing slowly behind us.” Hawk told her quietly.

“Can we put down a barrage and spearhead out?” she whispered back. Hawk nodded.

“There’s a weak point held by humans.” Crash told her grinning.

She smirked. “Oh well, in that case we’ll definitely take that then.” They all sniggered knowing it would be another trap. “Hardest point it is.” She whispered.

They all nodded and started to soundlessly unload their packs. She lifted the glasses and looked at Jonesy again. If he’d known he was being followed, she knew he’d have never made the rendezvous. So he didn’t and had to be seriously compromised not to have realised that and they’d played it smart, staying back enough not to tip him off. That gave them room to make a move. The rest of her team came back telling a similar tale. No movement until after they’d passed by.

“He doesn’t know he’s being followed, they kept back, that gives us an opportunity.” She gave a nod to Hawk who gave instructions to make a diversion in the direction of the humans and make the actual spearhead where they wanted it and to hold it as the shit hit the fan. They all moved out.

Pinpointing the tree’s she would be using and their distance, she adjusted the explosives on her arrows. Time clicked down as they waited and then all hell broke loose at the diversion. Her quad laid down a huge barrage beyond and to the sides of Jonesy breaking apart anything in their wake. Jonesy realising the jig was up was moving as fast as he could in their direction, but it was Cyborg slow barely jogging human. The diversion having kicked off, Hawk and Spike were up and running for him. Notching her arrows, she took position waiting for whatever would be coming out of those trees directly behind him, while Comet and Crash kept up the barrage left and right and to Jonesy’s flank, the first KC came running out the woods before Hawk and Spike reached him. Some premature action that had to have had him dodging falling trees exploding, that just ended up with him getting an explosive arrow in his gut taking him down as his reward. Not a smart move. She notched another quickly watching the trees as Hawk and Spike got to their man, more KCs started to pour out the trees behind them, she notched and fired hitting each one centre mass taking them down too. Finally getting Jonesy up, Hawk and Spike hauled him to his feet, half carrying him between them heading in the direction of the exit they were making, firing at anything coming at them.

She, Comet and Crash gave them cover for as long as the barrage lasted then moved fast heading to the spearhead. Both Cyborgs now using weapons as she continued to fire arrow after arrow never missing a mark at the chasing pack. The barrage on the diversion now over too, she could hear fighting up ahead as her team pushed through the KC line as one before it closed in around them.

They knew the KC’s would be collapsing the trap and closing in fast now from all sides. They fought on the fly, no one stopping, when she ran out of arrows, she started using her guns, when they were done, rejecting and reloading clips after clips, until they were done for the fourth time, she used her throwing knives. The fighting up ahead had stopped, they pushed on through those that had been at the spearhead now taking up defensive positions keeping the gap open, until they were all through and kept moving fast. Patching Jonesy on the fly.

There was no time to stop. Someone had hooked up an IV of Cyborg blood and clipped it to his shirt. He was barely on his feet but looking better by the minute.

Movement caught her eye and she turned swiftly into it. A KC and two humans came running in fast. She didn’t hesitate to run and throw directly at the KC hitting his neck and chest. He went down on one knee to the surprise of his human companions but not before he got off a shot off, she turned away, but it caught and cut the muscle just below her shoulder. Reaching him from behind, she fought off both women, knocking weapons out of their hands and stemmed him. Going down dead. “Nooooo!” screamed out one of the women.

Moon covered her mouth. As three of her team reached her. “Shut the fuck up.” She nodded at her people. “Ties and gags, good and tight, check for weapons and trackers. Strip um if you have to. They slow us down, carry or kill um.”

“You hit?” Carlos asked.

“Lucky graze.” She sneered. Carlos looked at it and nodded.

The women now looked scared. One was crumpled and distraught. “What was he to you?” she asked.

“My, my husband.”

“What?”

“He said they’d changed him and gave him a new life. He was different, but he was still my husband.”

“You have children?” The woman was in shock. “Do they have your children?”

She shook her head. “No. We never had children and then he couldn’t have any, but they’d promised us he would.”

Fuck! What the hell now?

“When did they change him?”

“15 Years ago. He came for me last year. I thought he was dead, but he knew where I was. I only just got him back…” So about the time the KC had been making changes to how they dealt with humans. Particularly women.

There was no doubt the woman looked bereft. She was crying heavily, falling apart. If Moon didn’t know better, she’d say she was mourning his loss. Maybe she was.

Her husband. Marcus said they were experimenting.

Was this one?

Shelving that for now, they pushed on for where they’d left the vehicles. By the time they’d got to it, both women were being carried in in their underwear, both with wounds on their arms. Trackers must have been embedded.

Wasting no time, they were wrapped in a blanket and loaded into the second vehicle, hitting the road they all kept their eyes peeled. Everyone aware this could be a trap too. They changed drivers at four hours, the scanners showing no pursuit. Doing an eight-hour run before stopping for a break. Food, toilets and water was offered around.

“You hit?” Hawk looked at the wound as he passed her some food.

She shook her head. “Graze, he got lucky. Healing fine.” He gave a nod. “We’re not going to make the check in, not with this cargo and what was back there. Can’t take any chances. They’re going to be all over the place after this.” She nodded. He was right and left her to see to the women one at a time. Gags and ties securely in place. It was obvious the one with the KC husband had been crying. It made her wonder if that KC had targeted her deliberately because of the human connection or if it was something else. She knew from her SCs that they didn’t remember their first life when KC. But they did remember both their KC life and human life as SC, so how was what she said possible? Unless the hive mind was targeting those that were married before conversation in some way. She didn’t know, but she couldn’t think on that now. They’d be interrogated at the training ground.
