“You have to see the sunset.” Mckenna grabs my hand.
I grab my coffee, Mckenna grabs the plate, and we go outside. “Come here, hellion.” I sit down on the swing and pat the empty space next to me. Mckenna sets her coffee on a stool and sits down next to me. She shifts so her back is to my arm, her feet stretched out. It’s so damn nice having her like this with me.
The evening is warm, with crickets chirping. The sunset is all dark pink and purple. Five horses appear atop the hill, then gallop out of view.
“The only thing that would make this more perfect is if I knew where Penelope was.”
I take my phone out of my pocket and pass it to her. “Here.”
Her brow furrows as she reads the receipt. “Adrian…”
“Yes?” I can’t help the huge smile that’s on my face.
“You’ve known where Penelope was all this time, and didn’t tell me?”
I drag my lips across her neck, keeping my arm on her. I don’t want her to leave this spot. “I know. I should have told you. She didn’t move from the McIntyre Stables, Mckenna. She’ll be here Friday, and you can call the shipper. My mom’s known this family for years and has used them on her own horses. Penelope will have company, and they take lots of stops.”
Her green eyes fill with tears. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. That night, when I returned you to Club Lust, my plan was to fly you to Boston that night and be reunited, but then I said stupid things. I’m sorry, Mckenna.”
“No, you were hurt and doing what you thought was best. You didn’t have all the details.”
“But I was too wrapped up in obligation, still thinking that I had to keep hating your father. But now I know I was wrong, and nobody will ever come between us again.”
“Promise?”
She shifts down, so her head is on my leg. I twirl my fingers in her silky hair.
“I promise you, Mckenna.” Her answering smile makes my pulse race. I lean down and kiss her, a long, slow, sultry kiss.
She kisses me back, slipping her hand into mine.
We stay like that as the sun disappears, and the stars come out, until it turns cool.
“What happens now?”
“We get to live for ourselves for the first time in our entire lives. I think I want to take up cocktail making.”
Mckenna laughs. “I knew being obsessed with that bartender’s book would be useful one day.”
“Yep, and when you ace the NVALE, we’re going to celebrate with the biggest party.”
Mckenna snuggles in my arms, resting her head against my shoulder. “What about a small party with just you and me?”
“And maybe Grace and Brett, and maybe our parents.”
“Maybe. I have months to work on forgiving them. Think you’ll be able to?”
“I think everyone deserves to chase their happily ever after. I hope our parents have it.”
“I know I have my happily ever after with you, Adrian.”
“I can’t wait to marry you at that party.”
Mckenna’s gorgeous lips spread into a smile. “Yes! Yes.” She kisses me.
I laugh, fisting her hair. “Our teenage selves would be so proud of us.”
