“I need to get you cleaned up, hellion. It’s time to be respectable.”
“Yeah?”
“Yes. I need to show you what it’s like to be mine.”
Her smile fades as if she suddenly remembers what brought us to this bed together. She tries to pull away from me, but I clamp a hand around her waist.
“Don’t go anywhere.”
“I…this is our last day together.”
“Day and night. Midnight is a long way from now. Today’s the day you decide if you want to be mine.”
She exhales, her body soft against mine.
I nibble her ear, squeezing her breasts.
“Okay, Adrian. Show me what being respectable means to you. A dinner party?”
“No, that was yesterday,” I kiss her ear. “You won’t have to go to any dinner party you don’t want to.”
She makes a noise.
I squeeze her ass. “Was that a snort?”
“A very respectable snort. There are always dinner parties,” Mckenna grins and I run my thumb along her side, loving how she jerks under my soft touch.
“If you don’t want to go, you don’t have to.”
She stiffens in my arms for a moment. “Wouldn’t that be expected of your wife?”
I sigh. “Mckenna, look at me.”
She rolls over and faces me. Her green eyes fill with concern, and I want to ease her fears.
“My mother was that kind of wife. It’s not what I want for myself.”
“What do you want?” She walks her fingers along my forearm.
The question takes me back because it’s been a while since I’ve thought about my future. My path has been laid out for me since birth. I’d get a good education, and then I’d join my father in his business.
Except, my father’s business was in jeopardy, due to Mckenna’s father’s bad decisions, so I started my own company.
That was the respected thing, the thing I had to do to keep up appearances and to keep the family name in society.
“I want a partner I can laugh with. I want to do something I’ve never done. I want a comfortable home.”
“With me in the kitchen barefoot?”
I drop a kiss on her lips. “If you want to be, but I want to cook,” the words spill out of my mouth, and I know they’re true. “I want to garden and sell veggies by the roadside. I want to watch our kids on the farm as you give lessons or while you’re at work.”
“You’ll be a stay-at-home dad?” Mckenna’s shocked voice is so comical that I laugh. “I don’t know if I want kids.”
“As long as I have you, Mckenna, I’ll be happy.”
And saying the words, I know they are true. Why not take this chance to break away with her? I could break away from my high-society life and do something more…pedestrian. We could both have fresh starts.
“But now it’s time to get you cleaned up. As much as it’s tempting to spend the day in bed, I have plans.”
