“You are a gifted orator, Senator. I was merely trying out there.”

“Nonsense. This is my daughter, Caroline. The light of my world. She is a fierce leader. Driven and strong. Couldn’t be more proud of her.”

The two of them exchanged a look of delight.

“Hey Jack, Caroline,” she led the way, choosing not to disappoint her father. She was going to tell him they had already met since she was on the senior committee. She was sure he had already forgotten about it.

“Pleasure to meet you, Caroline. Congratulations!”

“Thank you. These are my mother, stepfather, and Alex.” Caroline extended the greetings awkwardly. Alex what? It occurred to her she hadn’t said anything about his affiliation with the family. “Alex works with my father.” She added.

As far as Alex was concerned, she might as well have stabbed him with the dagger and twisted it while she was at it. He might not have thought anything of it had she stopped after simply calling him by name as she introduced him. To say that he works with her father. Not a friend. Not a senior aide. Not a top assistant. No, works with her father. As if he were a lowlife she couldn’t be bothered with. He tried as hard as he could to hide his disappointment. Knowing he couldn’t possibly measure up to the stature of Jack, who he had heard a few things about, he made the excuse of needing to attending to calls and left.

“So, what are you doing for dinner? You must dine with us. By all means!” The Senator said, turning his attention to the group after greeting a few others gathered around him. Celebrity and success are like an irresistible magnet.

“Eh…” Jack looked at Caroline seeking for permission. The truth was he had wanted to have dinner with her, but canceled because of the standing conflict. Caroline said all she could to expressed her unreserved desire. Tilting her head to the side and blinking her eyes while looking directly into his.

“If you insist Senator…”

“You must. Who knows when we might run into each other again? Well, I must go now. See you this evening. Sweetheart, give him the details, will you?” The Senator kissed her on her cheek and left to greet the president of the university and a few other dignitaries standing around waiting for him.

Caroline was left standing there with her mother and stepfather on one side, and Jack on the other. She couldn’t fathom how her father managed to pull this off. It meant that she will have more time to spend with Jack. Her heart fluttered with excitement and anticipation.
