“I know. I had a breakfast … thing. They tend to take place, you know, early.”
Paige watched as he rubbed his beard a little and tried not to get sidetracked by how appealing he looked lying in bed, or by the fact that she’d probably be seeing it firsthand, very soon. Hoo boy.
“You look a little flushed. Are you okay?” he asked.
“I’m fine. And I’m not flushed.”
“You kind of are, actually.”
“Fine. I’m flushed. Can we move on?”
“Sure,” he agreed with a smile. “So, you’re in. As in …”
“I’m going to use you … for sex.”
“Jesus, you kept me waiting long enough. You were over-thinking it, weren’t you?”
“It’s a big decision.”
“So was buying a house and we made that decision in less than one day.”
She didn’t say anything to that. It was true.
“So, we’re doing this,” David said, getting the conversation back on track and looking pleased. “You’re sure?”
She nodded. “Are you sure?”
“I’ve been sure. And I’ve been patiently waiting an entire week for you to catch up. That’s seven days, by the way.”
Paige just looked at him.
“What’s that look for?” he asked.
“This look?” She pointed to her face. “This is my I’m aggravated as fuck look.”
“You’re aggravated as fuck? Did someone keep you waiting a week?”
Just then, his attention shifted for a moment and she could hear a voice in the background calling out, “Daddy!”
Jacob.
David turned back to her. “I have to go,” he told her softly. “But why don’t you come over tonight around 7 p.m.? If you’re not working, that is. Jacob will be at Ashley’s and we can talk more.”
Her schedule actually permitted that, so Paige quickly agreed. “Okay. See you at 7 p.m.”
Chapter 67
Not surprisingly, the day dragged like a Lord of the Rings movie marathon and by the time Paige arrived at the loft that night, she was in a bit of a state. So much so, that she stood there for several minutes doing her stupid breathing exercises while staring at the door. When it seemed like she had her shit together, she raised her hand to knock, only to lower it, almost immediately.
Was she doing the right thing?
Paige raised her hand … and lowered it again.
What if she was making a huge mistake?
Paige raised her hand and lowered it again, then proceeded to do it a half dozen more times, with a half dozen more questions, until she circled back to the beginning.
Was she doing the right thing?
