“You sold the house?”
Even though David sounded more than a little hurt, his sharp tone and obvious anger overshadowed it and Paige took a second to gather herself before responding. “Yes.”
“You could’ve told me.”
She exchanged a frown with Jules. “I did. I emailed you and told you I was selling it—”
“Bullshit. I think I’d have remembered that. Jesus, I don’t have dementia.”
Jules raised her eyebrows, then covered her mouth, stifling a laugh.
“Are you sure?” Paige asked. “Because you replied to the email I sent you.”
“What are you talking about? I never got an email from you that you were selling the house. I found out five minutes ago that you sold it. From Marilyn,” he added. “If I had known, I obviously wouldn’t have wasted my time and driven to the house. Although, I can’t really say it was a complete waste of time, since I wouldn’t have known you’d sold the house otherwise. And I wouldn’t have gotten some applesauce.”
Paige and Jules shared a look as they realized he had made the trip to the house.
“I’m so pissed right now,” he continued. “Seriously, Paige, how could you?”
Across the table, Jules looked pissed, too, and she made a slashing motion across her throat, indicating the call should be terminated.
Paige wasn’t done, though. “I don’t care if you’re pissed. Frankly, I’m a little pissed myself. I told you when I was selling the house—and why—and I’m not going to go into that again. I suggest you go back and re-read my email and refresh your memory, while I go back to my date. You’re not going to ruin this one, too.”
He started to say something, but she didn’t wait to hear what it was before disconnecting the call.
“Block that asshole and don’t look back,” Jules ordered. When Paige hesitated, Jules practically growled, “Do it.”
Feeling strangely bereft, Paige blocked his number and then set her phone down. “You know, I still don’t know why he needed to talk to me.”
“What are the chances that it’s something you really need to know?”
“I don’t know. Part of me thinks he was going to tell me something fantastic like he and Ash were going to get married or have another child. You know, so in case I ever ran into them again, there wouldn’t be any ‘surprises’.”
“Well, if he was going to tell you either one of those things, you don’t need to hear it.”
“No, I don’t.”
Jules then smiled. “Date, huh?”
Paige shrugged. “What? I know it was childish, but fuck it.”
Chapter 32
David tried calling Paige back several times, but it went straight to voicemail each time. Beyond aggravated, he drove to his mom’s house to pick up Jacob, since it was getting close to his bedtime.
“Did you talk to her?” Valerie asked the minute he walked in the door.
“Yes and no.”
David told her what had happened, getting even more angry as he re-lived it.
“I can’t believe she would sell the house and not tell you. It really doesn’t sound like her,” Valerie said with a frown. “But then, again, she didn’t tell you about the book, either.”
“She said she emailed me about selling the house, but I never got it. And she also said that I replied to it …”
“That’s weird.”
“I know.”
