“Devereaux slept really deeply,” I said. “I wonder if that’s normal for him.”

“Dude was probably awake with a raging boner all night.”

I laughed and poured her a coffee. I’d stopped drinking the stuff now. Passing over her mug, I asked, “So where are you two at now?”

She tucked her flawlessly straight hair behind her ear. “We’re going to date. Exclusively. He might not be ‘the one,’ but he feels like the one to me.”

And that was my cue. This was the right time. “Sol, he is the one.”

She’d been talking and didn’t immediately stop.

When she did, the siren froze.

My heart filled with joy, and I let it shine. “He’s the one. Your true love.”

Coffee poured out of her tilted mug, and I left her in the kitchen to absorb that tidbit.

The doorbell rang.

I smiled at the new arrival. “Hey, sleepyhead.”

Devereaux ran a hand through his dark hair. “I can’t believe I slept through you leaving.”

“You were out to the world.”

“I’ve never slept that well,” he said in bafflement. “Ever.” His gaze roamed my face in wonder.

Knowing I could bring him the peace needed to sleep—or for his predator to bunker down enough to allow him to sleep—made me really happy.

He held out a bag. “It didn’t look like you’d had breakfast. I bought you this.”

I opened the bag to find a best-taste bagel inside. Yessss. “I love you.”

“Don’t mention it. I better keep moving. The chief just buzzed us in. The latest Toppling 12 Pillars column just dropped, and there are riots outside the Opifis’ estate.”

Whoa. “Really?” I hadn’t read the column yet.

“Seems like the family isn’t just using their factories for manufacturing legal products. We’re storming their main premises in an hour.” He winked. “Don’t tell.”

I zipped my lips. “Please be safe.”

“I’ll do that, sweetheart. Heard from Gug?”

“An hour ago. She wants to meet with everyone.” I swallowed because not everyone would be coming to the meeting now Fenton was gone. “We’ll go through what she has. She said she’s writing her article.”

Devereaux whistled. “She’s going to go at them in the Nepos Notice too?”

“Seems like it.” I blinked over his shoulder as black carriages lined up in a row outside our window. “Jail carriages. Are they meeting you here?”

Devereaux glanced back as law enforcement poured out of the carriages, storming into Yearning Hearts.

“Soleil Hucs,” the front one roared. “Where is she?”

Shoot.

Devereaux stepped forward. “Officer, report.”

The officer lost his furious demeanor. “Sir, we have orders—”
