Bain cursed, kicking back his chair, and stormed out after her.

Lerome glanced around. “Do they know each other?”

Devereaux leaned forward. “You don’t need to personally go underwater, sweetheart.”

The griffin peered between us. “Do you two know each other?”

I clenched my jaw. “No one else can see what I see.”

“We can figure out how to communicate, so you can direct me.”

Big no. “It doesn’t work like that. I have to be there.”

Soleil returned and grabbed my hand. “I need you to come tell this asshole he’s been an asshole!”

The griffin peered at us. “Everyone knows everyone.”

“Yep,” Gug muttered.

Fenton groaned. “I guess this meeting is over.”

I grabbed my tote and was dragged out by Soleil.

Bain was upstairs destroying the room where Fenton lost consciousness that time I got curse-ball happy. When Soleil entered, he charged her. I wrenched my hand free as his white magic blazed.

“I fucking hate that blur charm,” he seethed. He touched her face, dissolving the magic.

Soleil shoved at him.

Devereaux shut the door and whispered against a no-gossip charm, tossing it against the door. Probably for the best.

“Hey.” I edged closer with my hands raised. “What’s going on here?”

The unicorn glowered, but Soleil answered. “Bain believes that I’m not good enough for him.”

I cringed inwardly but managed to keep my voice neutral. “What were his exact words?”

“That with everything I know about the twelve, I should have taken them down long ago if I were worthy of him.”

Bain’s glower faltered.

What an idiot. He was pushing her away with a method certain to wound her enough to work. And it was damaging their true love.

“Bain, why are you pushing Soleil away?” I asked.

“That’s what he’s doing?” She lost some of the fury from her features.

He shot me a look. “It’s not so simple.”

I stepped forward. “It is, and you are. But why?” Well, it didn’t take a genius to put it together. “You’re worried that your work against the twelve will come back to hurt her.”

Bain didn’t answer.

Soleil’s bottom lip trembled. “Don’t you think I’m worried about what they’ll do to you?”

The unicorn closed his eyes. “My plans don’t allow for someone I care about. What I do only works because I have no herd and no loved one to be used against me. I have money, but no love of it. Power, but no dependency on it. You weaken me, Soleil. And what they might do to you makes me afraid every second of the day.”

Finally.
