“You said all those horrible things to me so I didn’t threaten your little plan?” she asked hoarsely.

Not quite how I’d interpreted it, but she wasn’t wrong about the horrible part.

Soleil bunched her fists. “From birth, I’ve been in danger. Danger is like breathing to me. The thought of being in it is nothing because I’m lethal and I know how to deal with it. But do you know how I became that way?” She moved to stand directly before him. “Because my family tried to break me by saying and doing horrible things.”

Bain flinched.

“You’re no better than the people you’re working against,” she whispered. “I hate you.”

I let out a low moan, my knees shaking as the purple strand of their braid shriveled.

Devereaux gripped my arm, supporting me to stand as dread and pain rocketed through me. “What is it?” he whispered.

Bile surged up my throat as a teary Soleil left. “Their bond.” I locked my knees as the shock wave dissipated. “I’m fine.”

But Soleil and Bain weren’t.

True love could be effortless, but their pasts were clashing big time, and I was wary of their potential love becoming icy hate. “Bain.”

The unicorn had started after Soleil but halted, glancing back.

Walking past him, I closed the door and turned. How much to tell him? I lifted my gaze to his impatient one. “You’re screwing this up.”

He ran a hand through his long white hair. “I’m trying to protect her.”

“You can do that. In the right way. You really hurt her. Again. Worse.”

“I know—”

“No.” I walked closer. “Please remove my blur charm.”

Bain sighed and a second later, the magic drained away.

I let every inch of my seriousness settle upon my features. “You really hurt her this time. What you’ve done isn’t something an apology will fix. You have damaged her, at her root, do you understand?”

He paled. “Maybe that’s for the best.”

I jabbed a finger at his chest. “Listen here, you stubborn bloody horse, love makes fools of us all, but you’re taking the fucking cake.”

His expression cooled. Maybe at the horse jab. “She’s better off.”

I gripped either side of his head and dragged him down to my eye level. “Bain, I am a descendant of Venus’s line, and I am telling you that you will forever regret making Soleil hate you. Forever.”

He sucked in a breath, his gaze searching mine. “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying that you would never, ever recover from truly pushing her away. And neither would she. Beyond that, I won’t offer more.” I held his rainbow gaze. “Pull your head out of your ass and fix what you broke, or have it haunt you and her until your dying days.”

Leaving him half-stooped and completely shocked, I caught Devereaux’s eye and jerked my head.

We left the room.

“Will they be okay?” he asked.

I exhaled. “Time will tell. He seriously messed up.” My very being shied away from what I’d seen with their connection. “I need to find Soleil.”

We paused by the front door where Fenton waited. He cocked a brow and removed Devereaux’s blur charm. “Trouble in paradise?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know?” I replied, then switched course. “Fenton, don’t you get lonely?” I could hardly bear the withered sight of his love line.
