“And what’s our sex to you?” she asked him. “Is it mind blowing amazing?”

He cleared his throat and loosened his grip on the steering wheel, his knuckles returning to a normal colour. “It is, yes.”

“I can feel a but there.”

“But sometimes it would be nice to not just, you know, fuck like animals that can’t control themselves.”

Kyla’s heart started pounding. She had a horrible feeling this conversation was going to go somewhere she didn’t know how to process. “What are you saying?”

Dylan let out a long breath. “I’m saying that as much as I love our banter and our power play dynamics, sometimes it would be nice to just be, you know...nice.”

“I’ve had a fucking day from hell, Dylan. Please don’t push me back to where I was twelve hours ago.”

Dylan nodded. “Understood. End of topic.”

Chapter 16

The remainder of the two-minute journey to Kyla’s house happened in utter silence. Dylan only felt a growing frustration at his desire to be with her and her lack of acceptance of it. Kyla only felt angry, furious that Dylan felt he could cage her in and take away her freedom, wanting her to rely on only him.

As he pulled up on her driveway, he let the engine run, allowing it to cool down. He’d barely put it in park before Kyla jumped out of the car, slamming the door shut. Marching to her front door, keys already in hand, she unlocked it and threw it back on its hinges.

The more she thought about this situation, and his ridiculous behaviour when picking her and Sam up, the more the blood boiled in her veins.

“You’re mad, aren’t you?” Dylan asked, standing in her open doorway.

Kyla threw her bag up the stairs and whirled around to face him. She glared at him, her hands on her hips, and cocked her head to one side. “You think?”

Dylan closed his eyes for a few seconds, then opened them. “What have I done now?”

“You know damn well what you did. Don’t act all innocent with me. You were so rude to those guys. The guys that saved mine and your sister’s lives, might I add.”

“Look, you wouldn’t understand it, it’s a guy thing.” He shrugged his shoulders. “We know when another man is sniffing around—”

“Sniffing around what, Dylan? Don’t you dare say what’s yours because I’m no one’s.”

Dylan checked back over his shoulder, looking at his car. “I need to switch the car off. I’ll be back in a sec.”
