“Okay, we’re here and I’m parking several blocks from the bus stop. Fisher and Kira are going to stay out of sight. I’m going to the bus stop,” Chase said.
“Okay, Tanner and Brock should be there shortly to be your backup,” Demetria said. “We’ll be there soon also.
“Good,” Chase said. “Okay, if I don’t see them, I’ll be back to tell you what happened.”
Fisher and Kira left the deputy’s car. “We have to get closer to the bus stop,” Fisher said.
“Yeah, I agree,” Kira said.
“Just don’t let Oscar see you if he’s watching for anyone coming after him,” Chase said.
“Right. We’re going shopping.” Kira pulled Fisher toward a clothing shop.
“Super sleuths,” Fisher said.
“Yep. Time for a disguise. I’ve never had to do this before. Oscar would never expect us to be here, believing we’re still all tied up back at the cabin. If we are wearing different clothes, he really won’t believe it is us.”
“Yeah, I agree. We got lucky that we were able to use that man’s phone.”
“And that you were so clever about being handcuffed in front of your body. You would have made a good con-artist.”
Fisher laughed. “Only to do good.”
They walked inside the shop and hurried to find what they could use. At least they still had their wallets and that meant they could buy what they needed. It was cold out and it looked like they were getting rain. Their bags were in Kira’s car so they didn’t have their jackets.
“Jackets and hats, at the very least,” he said.
“This would look good on you,” she said, pulling out a teal jacket and teal plaid shirt.
He tried them on. She found him a blue jean cap.
“I’m going to try these on.” She pulled out a jeans skirt, something she normally wouldn’t wear while trying to take down a rogue shifter, and she hoped she looked a little dressier. She picked out a nice olive-green rain jacket with a hood. They picked out a backpack and purchased everything, changed clothes, and put their other clothes in the backpack.
Once they were outside the shop, it started raining.
“Perfect timing,” Kira said. “That will help us blend in with our environment.” She pulled up her hood.
So did Fisher and they headed toward the bus stop. But then he pulled her into his arms for a moment and kissed her.
“Do you see him?”
He smiled at her. “No, I just needed this after what we’ve been through. We’ve been in such a rush to go after him since he took us hostage, that we haven’t taken a moment to be there just for each other.”
She smiled and kissed him back. “I so agree. Sometimes it’s important to take a deep breath and realize what’s important in our lives.”
“Yeah. And you are definitely that for me.”
“So are you.” Any moment they could be in another gun battle—one-sided and they needed to share how they felt about each other in the event they lost each other for good.
Then they began walking toward the bus stop again but didn’t get close. They saw Chase standing under an overhang of a store where he was putting on a brown rain jacket and pulling up his hood.
Fisher and Kira were looking for Oscar and a boy with him, but they saw no sign of either. They might be at the wrong stop, or Oscar was hiding in a shop near the bus stop, not wanting to show himself in case anyone was here to grab him and Royce, should they try to meet up.
Fisher saw Kira’s car parked nearby. “Hell, there’s your car over there and we have no phones to tell anyone.”
“What if he left the car here and took an earlier bus to meet up with Royce somewhere else? Or he grabbed someone else’s car. This guy is sneaky. He might have figured if any of us found it, we would think he was hanging around here,” Kira said.
“Possibly a red herring. Sure. There’s a store that should sell burner phones.” Fisher took Kira’s hand and led her to the store. Inside, he purchased one, and she called Demetria.
