GT leaned back in his office chair and stretched his long legs. “Everything is fine, mom. You’re such a worrier.”
His mother sighed. “I know, I know. It’s just – after your father –” she didn’t have to finish the sentence.
“I know, Mother, believe me. I have my annual physical and I’m perfectly healthy.” He tried to reassure her and decided to dive right into his reason for calling. “You’re right about my rounds, but since I missed lunch I’m taking a short break. Reason for me to call is …” GT took a big gulp of air. “I’m in love.”
“What?” Marjorie exclaimed. “Who is she? Do I know her? How long have you known her? When can I meet her?”
GT held the phone away from his ear and grinned. His mother wasn’t easily excited, and he hadn’t expected how she’d been looking forward to a daughter-in-law. “Do you expect me to answer your questions?” GT grinned as he teased. “Or are you going to keep asking more?”
“No, tell me more, please.”
GT started to explain about Sandra, and suddenly his mother exclaimed. “The Duncan girl?”
GT’s head snapped up. “Yes. How did you guess?”
He could hear the smile in her voice as she answered. “I know my boy. It’s not like you to get so distracted during the gala, Gregory, and that Duncan girl did look familiar. I didn’t realize at the time. She was your physical therapist, wasn’t she?” They were silent for a few moments as they both wrapped their heads around it. “I think she’s a girl who can handle you.” She ignored his sound of protest. “When do I meet her?”
GT told his mother what happened with Sandra in a few sentences. Luckily, she didn’t scold him too much for mistreating Sandra. His mother had always been an advocate for equality for women, and she didn’t take kindly to his disrespect for Sandra’s job.
“I know, mother. I lashed out in anger, and I should have held my tongue.” He apologized again.
“It does you no good to apologize to me. She’s the one you have to say you’re sorry to,” Marjorie pointed out.
GT agreed with her and explained how he wanted to make it up with Sandra and what he had planned.
“You always did think big.” If his mother was astonished, she didn’t show it. “That’s a brilliant idea and certainly something I would support. I think your sister will, too.” His mother chuckled. “It’s quite fitting, and we were thinking about expanding anyway. It’s perfect.”
After his mother promised to call his sister, GT excused himself to make rounds. It was one of the aspects of his job he loved. Performing a complex operation was a challenge, but interacting with his patients when they were cognizant reminded him every day why he did his job.
Chapter Twelve
“You got to face him sometime, honey. You’ve been hiding out here for almost a month now.” Ruby’s tone was sympathetic but unyielding.
“It’s only been three weeks. At least get your facts straight,” Sandra responded.
“It makes no difference. It’s too long.”
Sandra sighed and looked at her friend. Ruby had talked her way in the front door of her apartment about fifteen minutes ago and blown Sandra’s dream of a quiet Saturday evening with ice cream and Netflix to smithereens. Again! Her bestie had been driving her crazy for the last couple of weeks. Maybe it would be easier to give in?
“I don’t want to see him. Especially not at Club Indigo.” Meeting GT was both daunting and hopeful. Is he mad at me? Has he forgotten me? Moved on? “What if he’s playing with another sub?”
“Would that be a bad thing?” Ruby’s question registered, and Sandra realized she’d spoken her last thought aloud.
“Umm, no. It’s. . .it’s okay. He isn’t mine; he should move on, right?” She wouldn’t convince a kindergartener with her dithering. Even to her own ears she sounded pathetic.
“Do you want to play with him?”
Yes! No. Yes, hell yes. No, I shouldn’t. She thought Ruby might be able to see her head bounce with her contradictory thoughts. Ruby laughed out loud, and Sandra glared at her friend. “Why are you laughing at me?” Could she get away with offing her best friend? She narrowed her eyes – probably not. Momma McCormick would raise hell and so would Will, who had the entire police force behind him. Murdering Ruby was a bad idea.
“Never play poker, honey. You show your emotions way too easily,” Ruby answered. “Don’t worry, I have something special in mind.” She rummaged through the big bag she’d brought with her. “Luckily, you and Kate are about the same height and build.”
Sandra blinked in confusion and caught the green corset Ruby tossed at her.
“We’re going to Club Indigo tonight. That’s non-negotiable.” Sandra opened her mouth to respond and shut it with a snap when she caught Ruby’s gaze. Damn, the woman could be determined. Ruby continued, “It’s your choice if you go as a sub or a Domme.”
Sandra looked from the corset in her hand, to the bag Ruby was holding and back to the piece of clothing. Luckily you and Kate are about the same height and build. The meaning of Ruby’s words sank in. Her friend had brought clothes from the red-headed Domme for Sandra to wear to the club. Sandra made a snap decision and hoped she wouldn’t regret it later. “Domme.”
Ruby beamed a smile at her. “Let’s go.”
