I shook my head, my stomach clenching as the reality of what had happened hit me. "We're back to square one. Without that money coming in we're only going to be able to float for another month or two at best."

She squeezed me tight. "We'll work it out. We always do."

I took some solace in that, knowing she was right. We'd made it this far on a whim and prayer. Our business would survive.

My heart meanwhile? Only time would tell.

Chapter Thirteen

Ash

A commotion interrupted my chain of thought.

I looked up from the intake I'd been perfecting to see Dylan arguing with Sally. With a frown, I shoved up from my desk, heading out to reception.

"Problem?" I asked, leaning against my door.

"Mr. Dogg," Sally turned to me, her expression pinched. "We need to talk. Immediately."

"And I," Dyl said, looking extremely put out. "Have already told you he's not to be disturbed."

Sally slapped a printed piece of paper down on Dylan's desk, pointing at it. "Read it and tell me this isn't an emergency."

I walked across, picking up the paper to scan the contents.

Who is Ash Dogg's hook-up?

The article was a fluff piece from a known gossip news outlet.

"As you can see, the article is damning. I've taken the liberty of firing the offending contractor, and have organized for a new number and email to be provided to you immediately." Sally crossed her arms, a satisfied smile painting her face. "The press release will make it clear that you have had only minimal contact with Ms. Hawthorn, and that any implied intimacy is an inaccurate observation."

I stared at this woman before me, stunned at her self-entitled air.

"You did what?"

"I fired Thorn and Kei Designs this morning."

For a moment my world shifted, my body jerking in denial.

Millie.

"Sally?" I asked, barely able to control the rage in my voice.

"Yes?"

"You're fired."

She stared at me, her hands dropping. "What?"

"Fired." I turned to Dylan. "Call security. I want Ms. Turner removed from the premises immediately."

Dyl nodded, their thoughts hidden behind a mask of cool indifference. "Will do."

"What do you think you're doing? You can't fire me! I just saved—"

"Stop."

I turned back around, pegging her with a glare. Rage boiled my blood. I wanted to rip something apart.
