Liesin drew a white circle on the floor then looped swirling lines within that circle. Nova stood over him with her arms crossed over her chest, looking down at him. “What are you doing?”
“This will amplify the call. Rather than a request for them to come, it’s a demand.” The lines looked rough on the stone floor, yet he kept on drawing, making them more curved and bolder.
Nova rolled her eyes. “Is that actually a thing?”
“Do you think I’m lying?” He stopped and looked up at her with those deep purple eyes.
She scoffed. “If the name fits, Liesin.”
Zinnia and Tucker stood next to the door, both of them tense and uneasy. Tuck shuffled from one foot to the other. “This is a bad idea. You didn’t see them up close and personal like I did. Whatever comes of this won’t be good.”
“I wish there were another way. We just have to make sure it doesn’t get out of this room.” She held two balls of magic her hands, waiting for the moment when she had to fire them off.
Beckett brushed against my shoulder. “I don’t like this.”
“Me either.”
“I don’t trust this guy. He’s the one who got Nova trapped in the underworld and now he’s going to help us? Why? It’s shady.”
I nodded. “So shady.”
“What do we do?” He brushed his knuckles against mine. “What do you think we should do?”
“We’re running out of time. Nylore is just toying with us now. You saw him.” I didn’t want to have to admit it, but we only had one choice. I sighed. “We have to summon the Fury and we need Liesin to do it.”
Adrienne walked in with a book and handed it to me. She pointed to the page. “Can you make that?”
“Ummm, it’ll be complicated, but I think so.” I flipped the page back and forth.
She grabbed the book from my hand and tossed her long braids over her shoulder then snapped the book shut. “Excellent. You’re going to have to make that the second she tries to get away, but if she sees it when she arrives, she’ll run before he has a chance to question her.”
“Got it.” I cracked my knuckles. “Piece of cake.”
“Hey, Astrid, was it?” Liesin stood up straight to face me.
“Yes, it’s Astrid.” Not like my name was hard to remember.
“Is there a way that you can put like a chalkboard or something on the outside of that so I can draw the symbols needed to contain her?”
“I’m sure I can manage that.” I didn’t want to sound snappy, but come on, the dude was shady as shit and deep down we all knew it.
“I don’t think your friends like me much.” He turned back to Nova.
She rolled her eyes and tossed her hair over her shoulder. “Gee, I wonder why.”
Liesin dusted off his hands and turned his cocky smile on the rest of us. When his wavy black hair fell over his eyes, he reminded me of Hades himself. “The key to summoning a Fury is the bitterness of it.”
“Excuse me?” Nova backed away from him.
“Furies respond to broken oaths, awful acts of murder… Has any of you killed a parent?” He glanced around looking at all the hands that had gone up. “Um, okay. What about a mother, specifically?”
Everyone’s hands went down.
Cross sat forward. “I got one we can kill off if need be.”
Ophelia jabbed her elbow into his rib cage. Cross rubbed where she’d just hit him. “What? It was a joke.”
“Lots of daddy issues in this room, I see.” Lieson shook his head. “Fine, I’ll do it.”
