“Girl, your shift starts in like, half an hour.”
Piper held the phone away from her face and squinted at the time. “Shit!”
Dice sighed. “I’ll meet you there. I got your uniform.”
“Life saver.”
“So, you gonna ride that D all the way to work or what?”
“Byeeeeee.” She hung up on Dice and turned her back to me then threw the sheet behind her and right at the bed. It fell across my legs, and I took the hint and pulled it up to my hips.
“Leaving?”
She pulled her bra on then realized I’d cut the middle of it. “Well, that’s not holding shit together.”
“Beauty such as those should not be trapped.” I watched as she threw the scraps of what was left of her bra to the floor and pulled her sweater dress over her head.
She turned back toward me and gave me a half smile. “Sooooo.”
“So?” Was she going to do that awkward morning-after thing? Where we had a perfect night together only to be thwarted by unspoken questions.
“I have to go to work.” She slid her boots over those flawless legs she’d had wrapped around me only a few hours ago.
I rose off the bed and stood in front of her with the sheet draped around my hips. I wrapped my hand around the back of her neck and pulled her into me. She staggered forward and fell into me. I tipped her head back and pressed my lips to hers. The tension instantly left her body as she sagged against me. I loved the way she felt against my body and tasted on my tongue. I pulled back and smiled.
“Tonight?”
She squinted her eyes. “What about it?”
“I think we should have a proper date.”
“A proper date?” She stepped away from me and slid her arms into her jacket. “Look, this was . . . this was . . . well, it was nice. But I have work and stuff. I don’t have time to —”
“Time to test me against your very fallible picker?”
She groaned and ran her hand through her thick hair. “I don’t. I don’t want to.”
But everything in her eyes told me she did want to. There was a glint of hope behind those bright green eyes. She shifted from one foot to the other, and I grabbed her hand and ran little circles on it with my thumb. “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. But you’re a lovely Little Creature and I’d like to see you again.”
“Look, I’m not looking for pretty words. I need—”
“Dependable.”
She sighed. “You’re like, perfect. But a girl could forget herself in perfect.”
“Would that be so bad?” For all the strength and attitude the woman had, she was soft inside where it counted. The world and circumstances could’ve made Piper hard and bitter. Instead, they made her cautious and picky. Which was admirable given the life she’d led.
“It could be.” She shrugged.
“Or it could be something more.” We both didn’t know where this would go. But why kill it before it even started?
She let go of a heavy sigh. “Fine, one date.”
“I’ll be there.”
She sighed. “Sure, you will.”
“Have faith, Little Creature. I’ll be there tonight when you get off work.” I cupped her cheeks and placed a light kiss on the tip of her nose. When I pulled back, she looked up at me with those wide eyes of hers and I couldn’t help but smile. It was like she didn’t know what to make of me.
