“I wish to change my opinion on the witch. After further consideration, I have decided she is of the blood and standard to which I fully approve of.” Sav nodded in her direction.

“So glad you approve.” I rolled my eyes.

She winked at him. “Sorry, Mr. Bitey, but I’m taken.”

Sav glanced to Cross. “I wouldn’t dream of interfering in such a union, but I rather like the thought of friends.”

Ophelia nodded. “I’m always in the market for more best friends.”

“I was under the impression that one could only have one best friend.” Sav chuckled. “How many have you collected?”

“36! I include the lunch lady because she gives me extra brownies.” Ophelia leaned over Piper and whispered, “And they are delicious.”

I waved my hand between the two of them. “Can we focus here! Ophelia, how do we have to give her the potion.”

“Oxygenated face mask is best,” she and the doctor said at the same time. She gave him a thumbs-up. “Breathing it in will hit her hard and fast.”

Just then a guard knocked on the door and faced me. “Prince Grayson, the King has summoned you to court.”

Bloody fantastic, that is.

Cross’ eyebrows rose, and he shook his head. “Prince? I knew there was more to you, Leech.”

Ophelia sighed. “We all did.” She turned to the doctor, completely uninterested in me. “Now, you want to put three drops into the nebulizer and let it run for like thirty minutes.”

He took frantic notes on his computer. “Anything else?”

“Yeah, what are you going to do with that guy invaded by black magic?”

His eyes widened. “Is that what it is?”

“And then some.” She plucked at an invisible string on her sleeve. “I could stay and help you with that . . . for a price.”

“Ooooo,” Cross chided.

I couldn’t take much more of this. “I’ve got to see the King. Doc, do fetch me the moment she wakes.” I nodded toward the door. “Sav, shall we?”

The doctor turned back to Ophelia. “What’s the price?”

I turned and walked out the door with Sav by my side. And then I heard Ophelia muster all the excitement she had to offer.

“Well, I’m looking for best friend 38, and I think blood-girl will fit the bill perfectly.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

GRAYSON

“You did what!?” Titus shot to his feet and marched off the dais in the throne room. His face went from placid to bright-red with fury.

“Right. So this is going well,” I muttered under my breath.

“At least there is no one to watch,” Sav whispered back.

He was right. At least none of the other courtiers were present to watch the King literally tear me to pieces. In all fairness, rightfully so. Even so, his words echoed off the stone walls and high ceilings.

“Of all the daft things I’ve ever heard of, this is what you’ve endeavored to do?” He threw the length of his crimson coat out of the way and put his hands on his hips.

“If I may—”
