I pulled my legs to my chest and wrapped my arms around them. I waited for my heart to hammer, but it never came. “I don’t feel right.”

“I know.” Grayson took my hand. “I’m so sorry.”

“What happened to me?”

“I need you to stay very calm.” He sat down on the table next to me. “What do you remember?”

I shrugged. Everything was so hazy. “I remember walking in the street, then I think a car came and I-I think I got hit.” I looked around the room. “Am I in some kind of hospital or something?”

He shook his head and tightened his hand around mine. “Piper, you died in that accident.”

My mouth fell open and I shook my head. “No, but I’m alive. Just as much as you.”

“I tried to save you, Piper, as best as I could. I tried.” His voice broke for a moment, and he cleared his throat. “But your injuries were too extensive.”

Tears pricked at my eyes and confusion riddled my mind. None of this made sense. I was here talking to him. I couldn’t be dead. “No.”

“I want you to know you’re still you. Totally and completely you.” He met my eye. “Just a bit stronger.”

“What are you talking about?”

The doctor took his glasses off and rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand. “Sometimes you just have to come out with it.”

“Piper, you’re a vampire now.” He held his breath, waiting. His face was deadly serious.

A burst of laughter came from my chest. “You’re kidding, right?”

He opened his mouth and two fangs popped down. He stayed like that for a moment, then he popped them back in. “I’m sorry, love. It’s true.”

I sat there for long moments just shocked. I remembered getting hit, the pain over my body, the slow cold that took it over . . . and then nothing. My body was stronger now. I felt the thrumming power through my body. I looked at the doctor. “Are you one too?”

He gave me that kindly grandfather-like smile again, then his two fangs popped right out. “Yes, I am.”

I pointed at Grayson. “I had my tongue in your mouth, and I never felt those.”

He chuckled and shook his head. “Yeah, I behaved myself.”

“I mean, we both know that’s not true.” My mind raced with a million questions and not even one could be answered before my brain moved on to the next.

The doctor cleared his throat. “My dear, I have to ask you some questions. And if you remember anything, I’d love to know. It could help future newly feral vampires.”

“Feral?” How could I be feral? I was calm and collected. “I’m not feral.”

“You were for a short time, but you’re doing great now, love.” Grayson nodded toward the doctor. “Just try if you can.”

I pressed my lips together and gave him a little nod. This was the most surreal thing that’d ever happened in my life, or should I say my death. But I was glad I got a second chance. The chance to maybe live just for a moment longer.

The doctor pulled a rolling station closer to the table and perched his glasses back on the end of his nose. “Did you eat an animal?”

I shook my head. “Ew. Not that I can remember.”

“Did you have a human?” His fingers flew across the keyboard.

“Oh my God. Grayson, did I kill someone? Did I hurt them? Is that why you all had to tie me up?”

“Piper, calm. Also, ouch.” He pulled his hand out from mine and shook it. “Gentle, love.”

“Did you have one with alcohol?”
