He nods slowly.

“Just to be sure, we should do that again.” He licks his lips. “Just to be safe, I mean.”

This time I dip my tongue into the shot glass and draw out the fluffy cream, but I don’t even have a chance to offer it to Caleb. He’s already pulling me to him and greedily sucking the cream from my tongue.

When he pulls away from me, I’m breathless. Like, just ran a marathon breathless, and I’ve never been kissed like that before. Shit, even my hands are shaking.

“Fuck, I need a drink.”

Somehow I manage to bring the shot glass to my mouth without spilling any and down the whole thing, licking my lips with the sweet stickiness. Without the whipped cream, Caleb downs his easily, and the air between us is so charged I feel like I’m in a science experiment. The title on the kid’s bristol board project at the science fair would say: ‘How whipped cream kisses create instant lust and heighten awareness. A case study in restraint.’

“Shall we find our seats and take a break?”

Caleb’s voice quivers and I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s overwhelmed.

“I think…I think I need food and to sit down. Great idea.”

The tables are unassigned and we wander through the groupings until we find a table with couples in our age range and two empty chairs.

“Are these seats taken?”

“Hey, you’re the coffee store guy!”

One of the men at the table points at Caleb, and he laughs.

“I am! I remember you two from this morning. I hope you’re liking the town. You’re celebrating an anniversary, was it?”

Caleb pulls out the chair for me as he speaks to the couple and, with a gentle hand on my back, guides me to it. I murmur a thank you and sit as he slides into the chair next to me.

“Yes, it’s our one-year dating anniversary and this sounded like such a fun thing to do. We’re staying at the Maple Mountain Lodge and the tickets came with our room as a package deal. We’re so happy we found it.”

The two men gaze at each other with a warmth I’ve yet to experience before they share a quick kiss.

“That’s wonderful!” Caleb leans over the table and offers his hand introducing himself and says, “We’re here as a first celebration, too. It’s our first official date.”

“Awww, that’s so cute. How did you meet?”

The man whose name is Avery smiles as he sips from his colourful drink.

“He owns the bookstore across the street. I finally worked up the courage to ask him out.”

Caleb gazes at me and that one simple look makes me shake my head with a grin. God, he’s cute.

“What are you drinking? That looks amazing.”

Avery laughs and his partner blushes.

“It’s called a Magic Boner. You should try one.”

Caleb laughs, and now I see why he’s so good with customers. He’s so personable and easy to talk to. Funny how he alternates between that and a tongue-tied, adorable man with me. There’s definitely more to Caleb than just a great ass.

“What do you say, Mal? Want to try one of those?”

Mal.

Nobody ever shortens my name, but I like how it sounds from Caleb.

“Sure. Let’s find out if there’s magic to be had.”
