“Michelle, will you follow me outside for a private discussion?” Ella breezes past us, heels clicking against the tile, not waiting for a reply. Ella walks through the front door. Michelle follows, wringing her hands together as she chases after our boss.
I stand from my spot at reception and pick up my paper bag before making my way to Victor. “Holy shit,” I whisper, eyes wide. Did that just happen? “She isn’t getting fired, is she?”
Victor closes the door and pulls me into a hug. “I don’t think so,” he says, pressing a kiss against my hair. He brushes his fingers along my jaw, then tilts my head up so we’re making eye contact. “Damn, I missed you, Law.”
I giggle, momentarily distracted by his sweet affection. “You just saw me a few hours ago.” Even as the words tumble out of my mouth, I have to admit, at least to myself, that I already missed him, too. Waking up in Victor’s arms the last several mornings is something I could get used to.
“So, are we eating in here?” I walk over to Ella’s desk and place my surprise on it.
“Yup.” Victor points at my bag. “What’s that? A mysterious bag of your own?”
“Mmhmm.”
He laughs. “Let me guess, there’s some of Dee Rama’s secrets hidden in there.” Victor tickles my sides. “Should I be worried?”
“No,” I squeal between barks of laughter. “No secrets. It’s–it’s a surprise for you.”
He stops tickling me, lips parting as he stares at the bag. “You got something for me?”
“I did. Open it.”
Victor pulls some paper plates and a pink box out of the bag and tugs the top off. Inside are a dozen donuts in two flavors. Maple and Cinnamon apple.
“You got me maple donuts from my favorite bakery?”
I nod.
At one point during our time together, Victor mentioned the name of his favorite bakery downtown. But they close early on Tuesdays and Fridays, so he usually misses them. I called in a special delivery, hoping they would get here in time.
Victor pulls out a maple donut. He takes a bite and moans in appreciation before placing it on a paper plate. “How did you know?”
“Know what your favorite type of donuts were?” I say, parroting his words for our first date back to him.
He nods, eyes sparkling as he grins at me.
“Let’s just say a little birdy told me.”
Victor laughs. “What about this donut flavor?” He points at the apple cinnamon.
My face heats with embarrassment. “It’s your mom’s favorite. I was actually going to give them to you and see if you could pretend you bought them. I don’t want her to think I’m sucking up to the boss or anything weird. I just know how much you love this place and thought it would be nice if she got to enjoy a donut or two as well.”
“You bought my mom her favorite donuts?” he asks slowly, as if I didn’t just word vomit all over him.
“Yeah. Is it stupi–”
Victor yanks me to him and kisses me with so much passion, I forget where I am. His tongue pushes past my lips and caresses mine in a way that makes my body light on fire.
A low groan escapes him, and I moan with pleasure.
“Damn, you’re perfect. You know that?” he mumbles against my lips. “How did I get so lucky?”
“Well,” Ella says from her open doorway. She has a wide grin on her face. “I’m assuming this little birdy,” she points at herself. “Gets some credit for your good luck.”
I bite back my laughter. Victor and I glance at her, then back at each other. His cheeks are an adorable shade of pink, and I’m pretty sure I’m blushing, too.
Victor pulls a few Tupperware containers out of his paper bag and sets one in front of Ella and one in front of me. As he hands out some silverware, I can’t help but peel back the lid of my container. The scent of pesto and garlic hits my nose, and I moan with excitement.
I peek up to see Ella smirking at me and Victor looking so damn proud.
