“It... it was nothing,” I tried again.
Suspicion darkening her eyes, she looked at me and then at the men coming back empty-handed. With two sharp claps, she dismissed everyone from the room and quickly closed the door so no one else could hear or disturb us.
“Don’t tell me nothing again and if you say you saw a serpent I shall scrub your lips for lying.” Pointedly, she looked at the lower half of my robe. “Why are you standing like that?”
Desperate times called for drastic measures.
“If I tell you,” I begged, “you can’t say a word about this to anyone else. No one. You have to swear to it.”
“I’m going to summon the king.” Snapping around on her heel, Ayo started for the door, but I quickly grabbed her arm.
“Wait, please, I beg you, don’t tell anyone.”
Hands on her hips, she stared me down and made zero promises.
Cringing, without any choice, I reluctantly parted my robe to show her.
Ayo clapped her hand to her forehead. Together we stared at the waxy, half-done mess. “Eish, Princess! What have you done?”
I burst into tears. “Is it hopeless? I can’t get it off!”
Tsking, she forced me back to the scene of the crime and there we stood at the sink while I tried surreptitiously to get my thighs to stop sticking together and she studied the instructions.
“Fine,” she said, suddenly decided. Picking up a strip, she began rubbing it between her hands.
My jaw dropped. “What are you doing? I want you to help me take it off, not put more on!”
“In the words of the immortally wise Whoopi Goldberg, you can hardly go about with half a skunk on. Move your hand, and I don’t know, brace yourself.”
Oh. My. God.
I stood there, mortified to my very bones, staring up at the bathroom ceiling while the wife of the king’s assistant spread another wax strip all over my private areas. First smashing it down, then holding the flesh of me taut while she got a good grip.
“I feel as though you owe me dinner after this,” I said, knowing this was going to hurt more than just a minimal amount.
“And you owe me a drink,” Ayo muttered back.
