“But I love you!” I called out after him.
I had no idea if he heard me or not.
Chapter Fourteen
Azid
I poked my food listlessly, hardly listening to the conversation going on all around me. I was pretty sure Norah and Mazi knew I wasn’t fully present, but I just kept thinking about what Pita had told me. She loved me.
I loved her too. If I had my life a bit more together... if she were anyone else... I’d have married her in a heartbeat and considered myself damn lucky to have a woman like her to spend the rest of my life with.
But my life wasn’t together, and she was a princess. What the hell could I possibly ever offer her, except my love? Far be it from me to argue with The Beatles, but love is absolutely not all you need.
“Earth to Azid,” Mazi said, and I looked up.
They were staring at me. Someone must have asked something, and I’d been too spaced out to hear it. “Sorry?”
Mazi pointed, and I turned to find Jax standing in the doorway of the private dining area. He had a phone in his hand.
“A Mister Ezra is on the phone,” he announced again. When I didn’t move right away, with a barely suppressed eye roll, he added, “For you.”
Great.
Swiping my napkin from my lap, I excused myself and stood up. “My official forced resignation,” I told Mazi as I took the phone and excused myself into the other room. “Hello?”
Not one for small talk, he’d always been one to get straight down to business.
“You done pouting yet?” Ezra asked.
“Pouting?” I echoed, surprised.
“When you coming back to work? I’ve got a schedule to make out.”
“Wait, I thought I was fired. Frankly, I’m surprised I haven’t been arrested. How the hell did you even know where to call?”
“Mazi called me wanting to know if you really were fired.” As gruff as ever, he sighed, “Look, boy. We go back a long way. I don’t much cotton to what you did, but I can’t say that woman didn’t have it coming. We’ve had words. She’s banned until further notice. Now, when’s my best dancer coming back? The ladies miss their favorite anaconda.”
