“Because double waterfalls are sooo super lucky.”

“They are?”

“They are,” he confirmed.

“Why?”

I bit back a laugh. Tyler didn’t have an explanation; I could tell by his panicked look.

“I don’t know, Teenie.”

“Dada?”

“Yes, baby?”

“Why lucky?”

“Because a special mermaid carved them with her magical powers back when she didn’t have to be fearful of all the humans. She only made twelve in the whole wild world and they’re lucky because they’re so special,” I lied.

“Wow, mermaids make them?”

“Totally,” Tyler agreed.

“That’s so fun, right?” I asked her.

“Yas-huh.”

“I knew that, I was just making sure your Daddy remembered,” Tyler added, lamely.

“Full of shits, Uncle Tyler.”

I snorted at her sassy response, but before I could scold her, she squealed.

“Ohhhh, pretty!” The bottom of the waterfall was visible from where we stood.

“We can take the steps to the observation deck,” Tyler read from his phone.

“Lotsa steps.”

I sighed. There were steps, a lot of fucking steps.

“Snakes on stairs?”

“No, little one,” I lied. I was pretty sure every time a Daddy lied, a unicorn lost their magic. After today, I’d probably maimed one.

“I walk.”

Tyler set her down on the bottom of the wooden steps and she looked around. “Nu snakes?”

“Nope,” he and I said at the same time. Great, we’d probably murdered the fucking unicorn now.

“Hold onto the rail, Teenie.”

She grabbed the wooden handrail and climbed. We followed behind her, wanting to make sure she didn’t fall backwards on the steep climb.

“Wait there,” I commanded when she reached the top. Like a good girl, she halted.

“Hold our hands, okay?”
