Chapter 9
Stand by Your Mate
Davy looked around the kitchen where a couple females helped her get breakfast done. The hearty and good meal seemed to lift spirits at least a little bit. These people seemed unhappy in general and she hoped Garulto would do well for them. She was sure he would.
Frick had been a poor king so why he’d had any loyalty at all, much less to the death, she didn’t understand. Some of these people wore threadbare clothes, like the two females she worked with. Dori would do a world of good here. Inside, she just knew Ranger wouldn’t come and Garulto would. Her aunt had always been meant to be a queen.
Honestly, she would be glad when she and Jared left, and others took over. The ashes in the hallways and the burnt-out room she had almost stayed in gave her the creeps. She missed her baby and suspected another was on the way. Since the first one hadn’t come right away, she’d thought the second would take longer and had done nothing to delay it.
They were building a good life in Erak’s kingdom and she thought they would each move up when Garulto moved here. She was ready to be the Sergeant at Arms and Jarel would love to be a major. The promotions would make everyone happy and show there was upward mobility. Something that had been slow until recently.
Now there was excitement, but not all of it was good. They were dealing with rogues and traitors, but they didn’t deserve the positions they held. Now at least some of them were gone and others that had value would take their places.
Most had eaten breakfast and she left to find the room videos were taken and assessed in. There were two males looking bored and sleepy in that room. Video was being taken, but little of it was being watched. This room was not being run properly. Immediately, she began to talk to the males and explain why this room was so important.
They sat up a bit straighter and looked closer, but would it last? Meanwhile she’d be looking for more helpers for in that room. Jarel was running other things but she needed to find someone to find help for her. Milem would either know people or know who would. She headed out to the wall because that was where she’d seen him first.
That’s where he was watching along with the others. “Hey, Milem. I needed some help. I’ve been to the video room and you only have two guys in there.”
“Why is that a problem?” He asked.
“There should be five or six people in there. Often several are female. You know anyone looking to work in there?”
“Possibly. Give me a day or two and I’ll find someone.” He offered.
“Thank you.” She said as she hurried off. Time was of the essence since they wanted things as much improved as possible before Garulto and Aunt Dori got here.
“How are things going my mate?” Jarel asked as he slipped up behind her and hugged her.
“Probably as good as they are for you.”
“That bad, huh? I’m sure it will improve.” He said.
“I don’t know what that crazy king had going here but it wasn’t security. He also didn’t take care of his people. There must be some money hidden here. Hopefully Dori will find it so she can help their people.”
“They’ll certainly need all the help they can get. Did you look at those fields?”
“I did. Dori’s look so much better. She’s got a variety of crops too. They’ll get some cash once she establishes them. It’s sad what that king did. That shows politics even ties the hands of the emperor. Frick was worthless.” Davy admitted.
“It’ll get better. We’ll get it started to ease things for them. Once they get things going, these people won’t believe how much better things get.”
“I know you’re right. Maybe we should burn off that field? My dragon is feeling antsy.”
“Work first, then we’ll fly.” Jarel insisted.
“Okay. I know you’re right. It will be hard to make a big difference in such a short time.”
“True, but we’ll do it. You already showed them what good food is. Now we’re working on the security. Things will work out and then we’ll go home. The little one will be missing us.”
“You’re right. What if we have another one soon?”
“Are you telling me you’re with child again?”
“What if I am?” She asked playfully.
“I’d be the happiest male around.”
“I think so, but I’ve been wrong before. We get home then I’ll go see Betty.”
He picked her up and swung her around. “I love you, female.”
“And I love you. We’d best get back to work so we can get something done.”
“I know you’re right. Go on female.” He swatted her butt, so she swung it playfully.
